Hey guys,

Just wondering how you all organize your music in folders on your computers.

i.e
Artist -> Album -> Track

What way you think is best.

i right now have 4 port usb device. i use four flash drives and put different genres of music on each one. 1. Mixs (funkymixs, ultimixs , mash ups, etc) and Electro/Hard House/ ETC . 2. hip hop 3. country 4. rock I play alot of different places. Sometimes clubs and sometimes raves. So its nice just to grab one flash drive for that event

I don't recomend organizing it by artist or song. I have my folders set up by genres and inside each genre, i have about 1-10 or maybe 15 sub folders and those are my sessions. When you dj, you have to be able to find your stuff quick. I see many djs take too much to find the next song to play. next thing you know, the track is ending and ? Organize your music where you know it will be without always going thru a search. Some people also have just session folders too. What works for you....

Genre, decade, or file type would be my suggestion VDJ's search feature is so fast why go any farther?

i do a sorta messy version of what Teary suggested .........genre and decade are important , but then you end up with Springsteen in 4 different decades .....

i do multi decade artists , male vocal , female vocal , remix/ mashup , event stuff , duets , etc .....

virtual folders in VDJ help prevent unnecessary duplication , and filter folders do some great pin point searches .......get results by genre plus other filters in a combined search .....

when the request is playing 8 seconds later they are impressed

I agree with Caliente .... no substitute for having enough well organized folders in windows to find it fast ..... alphabetical by artist or track is a joke when you have a lot of trax

I go for year /month. As in 2009/01 Jan.

I tag my tracks 01 - tracktitle - Artist.

I do this coz a lot of singles are not usually linked to any albums.

I also agree in the importance of well organised folders. I refer to my music/to sort/old to sort and new to sort folders. I have quite a few to sort folders actually, hehehe.

For my subscriptions, I go by subscription name and issue. For the others, its by decade or genre.

This is what i mean about they way i have it setup...

Kool lots of diferent ways there, might have to give some of them a go see how things work out.

This is how I have folders arranged

It's quite basic really, but it's effective

As you see I don't mess around with sub folders, the less clicking I do the better, lol

Once I've scanned all my new files, then I just file them in the appropriate folder.

(BTW the Cheese folder is for all the cheesy party tunes, lol)

I think the correct tagging of the files is the first thing you should do.

Corect Artist, Title, Genre and if you need the year.

I sort my tracks in a very easy way. All albums are in the folder Albums.
There i create a folder for each one with the artist and album name.
Within the folder are all the mp3s.

Single Tracks are sorted by the year or genre (as you like).

Then i have created Filter Folder for my songs - like all from the genre house.
Or all tracks from Elvis Presley ;-) in an other Filter Folder.

Greetings, Heiko

Trust me Chuck...you REALLY don't want to know...

I used to have everything arranged into genres and then another 60s, 70s, etc, etc. Since I bought vdj and got into video mixing, I now have 2 - one called Videos, and a subfolder called Favs which has all the stuff I like to play. Just vdj search if you want to find something - I guarantee its about twenty times faster than any kind of rifling thru folders - you do need a keyboard of some type to do this quickly though.

i make sure it is all organized by genre and then song then by bpm on serato

Besides making folders by genres. I have sessions and i add songs into folders by what i think will mix with another. I don't add songs by BPM. I just think about how it sounds and i mix in my mind. This is when you live and breathe music. If a song is slower than the other, i just raise up the pitch and blend it in really nice or cut it in. Do this if you know how to mix almost anything. I have more than 40 folders and more than 30 sessions. I want to make sure i have all the good stuff in hand quickly.

I think im a music freak. An addiction of playing music. LOL

When I started DJing in the mid 90s, you couldnt really sort all your cds into GENRE order..

rather the albums were in one row (of the CD box) compilations in the next and CDSingles took 2 rows.
As i played something, it would get put at the front. the last few cds at the back got hardly played, so they got dumped for the new CDs.

When i got DIGITAL, i kept this order and stored my files in ALBUM folders and CDSingle and now VIDEO and Downloads.

then in VDJ, i use the search.
