I get my gigs through recommendations and no need to advertise yet? One of my venues i recently started the boss told me that they spoke to 5 DJs but my name kept being mentioned. One of the DJs the owner spoke to was in fact some one who gave me my first gig way back and this was brought up in conversation. I asked why he wasn't booked and it was because he his loud and blue and his attitude comes across as being offensive and sarcastic when gigging. Now we all enjoy a laugh and a joke over the mic, but my strict regime is not to swear or take say something which may offend unless its a heckler - then we can retaliate with in the bounderies of my ethics, oh yes we have them ! and generally be layed back and for this reason i won the gig said the boss. The other thing was folk tell me i am genuine and care about the folk, which to be told this to your face is some what embarrassing as this is their perception, good job they don't see me at home when i can be a frustrated hot head letting rip on the VDJ forum lol. I am Rabbiting on again as usual, sorry. It led me to wonder if any of you guys have had a similar scenario where by your reputation has won through with out having to play a demo for a regular Venue or may be your Venue booked you because of your boarderline jokes etc............

Hi,
I also never had to advertise to get Gigs. Mouth to mouth propaganda is my best advertisement. I know what you mean... in Germany we also have a lot of DJs that barely insult people on the Mic, and this is whanted in some clubs. I don´t like this attitude, and i try to use the mic less as possible becouse i love to let speak the music if you know what I mean! Certantly in some clubs they also whant moderation at all. I also know 2 or 3 DJs in my area that was kicked from the club for insulting people on the mic, but fortunatly not in my clubs!

Being sarcastic, taking the piss and having banter is what some places require. I've noticed that the people that go to the clubs on ruff estates and people that drink in pub's in ghetto areas like it, it's not for me.
I went to one pub in Hull that was legendary for going through DJ's, I was there to replace the one that had got filled in the week before! The place went really quite when I walked in, once I was set up I got a piece of string that I found on the floor and tied a loop in it and held it up and said come on then you fuc*ers who gonna do it!!! insinuating that I was gonna get hung they all found it very amusing. It's how you have to be with some of them, glad I don't have to work at places like that anymore but if I do I can hold my own against em.
Sounds to me like you have found a place that you will be happy at.

Charlie, like wise worked in some rough places, a good way to get to know the locals, never had any problems. I get invited to do all the birthdays etc....... good thing is when i am out for a beer no one hassles me as some one recognises me. No exaggeration packed up my gear one night when a 40 man and women fight broke out, a scene from a western - private Birthday party it was, i was reaching through the bodies fighting trying to retrieve my gear up and down two flights of stairs, eventually got out of the place and found some old geezer on crutches peeing against the car, what a night, still laugh about it to this day and still do some of the parties although not that venue.
