I might have this wrong but I've been hearing quite a bit about 24 bit audio, like, DVD quality audio which is awesome!
I have a 24 bit mixer, a 24 bit sound card....the thing is, out of thousands of mp3s, I only have 1 song that was recorded in 24 bit audio.
I know the band NIN has been doing some recording in 24 bit and there have been some remasters in 24 bit but remasters are not the same as a true original 24 bit recording.
The hardware industry seems to be all over 24 bit, but when it comes to physical media it is rare and makes me wonder if we will ever have an industry embrace 24 bit audio?
Nonetheless, I'm still running everything at the standard 44k 16-bit cd quality.
My machine skips and pops when I try to run 24 bit audio so my question is
1. How many people are pushing your sound card in 24 bit? Have you heard a significant difference in db?
2. What kind of computer system do you have? Mine is nowhere close or I've got my settings completely wrong.
Cheers

If you play mp3's you can never get 24bit since mp3's are a compressed file. If you play cd audio you can never get 24 bit since cd's are stuck at 16bit only dvd audio can realy get 24 bit in a consumer format. Superaudio cd uses 1 bit but a high sampling rate.

24 bit is used to have more data for dynamic processing.
Comparing 24 bit and 16 bit audio recording will make no
difference, unless you are listening to a jazz session or
an orchestra that has a very wide dynamic range of playing.
16 bits actually give you theoretical 96dB dynamic range,
while 24 bit has 144 dB's. So for modern music 16 bits is
more than enough, usually you have noise level so high
on the recordings themselves, that additional 8 bits won't
help on final mix. They will however if you process the
signal dynamically (compression, level adjustment, limiting,
expansion, etc.), which is done in mixing and mastering
stage. Thus 24 bits are used for recording more than playback.
Also the current trend is lower file-sizes and less dynamic
range, as general population does not appreciate quality
recordings and usually don't own an expensive speaker
system to actually hear the difference. So 24 bits will
probably stay reserved for music production and true
audiophiles for some time.
