Well the worst happened...I lost everything, years of work down the shitter, thanks to Western Digital...piece of shit external harddrive...just 7 months old a 1 TB....gone..poof...no warning...nada@!!! Worked fine one night, next night turned it on....wouldn't work .... right now its over at Pitt university with the top puter geeks, trying to help me out...but it's not looking good...they've tried software recovery programs, hooking my the harddrive directly to another puter...but so far..no luck...short of me spending $2000 to recover the info..I'm Fugded... anyway,...I'm proud of myself though that I didn't cry...just dove right back in trying to get back what I lost...meaning reripping my Promo's, about 4000 vobs..and retagging..ugh...and reripping cd's to mp3's...etc...I'm not even worrying about the karaoke I lost and the hundreds of hours I will have just ripping them back down...god...guess I just wanted to vent..and remind you all...BACK UP YOUR BACK UP.. if you use external harddrives...I was all set to do that,,,2 days before I was gonna get another harddrive...but got lazy, didn't go to the store...and then..what's happens...bam!..my harddrive crashes! Well back to my command center...got 3 computers going round the clock...trying to revamp...trying to get back up to speed within 2 months (my goal)..impossible?...nah..just exhausting...7 in the morning till 2 in the morning... also I now own 2 1.5tbs..(LaCie's quadras) and purchasing a 500 gb lacie rugged portable harddrive..well all...back to work...ciao...and yeah..I can't make the pity party I know you all will be having for me...busy..busy... lol....

sorry for your loss, you must be a bag of nerves. i'd better go out tomorrow and buy another external hd. did'nt think about that.

just as a note ....I purchased a segate free agent extreme 1.5 tb as well...but it's going back to store...the back up software that comes with it, dosen't run on a 64 bit system, just runs on a 32 bit system, wasn't stated anywhere on the box.. that info is just to give you external harddrive buyers a heads up.. so far I love my LaCie 2quadra 1.5 tb with eSata (fast for transfering)...its quiet, keeps cool..lots of storage, but I could only find that online, via amazon..roughly $230 , they make a 2tb as well.. I let you all know how it fairs after few months time....

hehe, i'm laughing here in sympathy for you, that happened to me twice, and have been sick as a pig without mud for nearly six months now, gone right through the alphabet replacing all those tags and i'm still only upto S, thats why i wish we had write to tags as i've got the files but forgot to copy the xml, mind it wont happen again got the file in three seperate locations now, gets updated once a month without fail, can't keep doing this for the rest of my life... lol

Which one did you have from Western Digital? I have their 1tb Elements hard drive and it has been great and hope it will continue to be.

it was a 1tb My Book from western digital...the enclosure was a piece of crap ..not sturdy like new aluminum ones I bought...never really compared them till this happened...but I do own a old western digital elements ..mmm...325 gb....that is still going strong..but then again, I don't use it often, it just stores all my pics...business shit...etc...but even that is built better than the thin hard plastic they now use on the "my book" models...also another note,...I found an online storage site...cheap...$5 a month unlimited called moxy,,but it is extremely slow to upload your stuff...I figure it will take me about 2 years to up load all my stuff, and that's running day and night..(uploaded 50 gb so far in 1week via dsl).but once it's on there ,...it's safe...I'm also burning everything before it goes into harddrive onto data discs...anal???.. perhaps..but this will never happen to me again...nice thing is that through the years, retagging some of my files..(genre's, comments...tags...etc)..has made it rough to do searches at times..plus music I had tagged say..top 40 aren't top 40 anymore..so they get retagged...it's like cleaning house......mmmmmmmm....speaking of which, now that I look around my room here..god..this recovery process is taking a toll on everything...well hell with the dust..I got music to recover....

good luck, i hope everyone can learn from you.

This is precisely why I use WD Enterprise Drives for Mobile Use. I still have everything backed up on my network drive, just in case.

I almost lost all my data about a year ago. My external drive worked but no files could be found. I was able to recover all files with Get Data Back software from Hirens Boot CD. Now I'm backing up everything almost every day. I use free Microsoft SyncToy software to do backup and it saves a lot of time synchronizing music folders. Highly recommended.

We all like to learn things the hard way :)

Had a close scare once when my external drive had a cord hanging over the table, got yanked and dropped to the floor while live and died instanly. Luckily I was only practicing at home and had a backup from a month ago. Now its weekly backups on sundays, almost like a religion :-D. Backups dont need to be expensive go get yourself a cheap terrabyte drive for under 150 US...alot cheaper than if you worked out even at minimum wage how much time is spent ripping the cds/dvds

On a side note, how about contacting any school nearby that might have a spare computer lab. Tell them the circumstances, offer to do a free disco or something. You'd get your music back alot quicker if you were ripping 20 discs at a time. I did that once over a school holiday break to convert alot of cds I had and found that by the time I got to the 8th or 9th computer the first one had finished alot of the time :D.

I have five drives with my music on them. Hard drives can fail at any time, and they are really affordable right now. Hence, there is no reason to risk everything on one drive. I cannot say this enough....back up your music!!

I had the exact same thing happen to me last year. Ended up buying a 1tb drive as my back up and now back up once a week. I only lost about 30% vids last year because I failed to back up for about 2 months but it was stuff that I re-edited and vids that took me months to revamp the sound quality. I have music stored on a removable disc on my phone 4gig for that just in case event just to get me through an event. Oh yeah, I'm still trying to recover... Every show I find duplicates. How does Tayla say it " It does my head in ".. lol

Just because it's new doesn't mean it will work 100% when you need it !

I guess that we first have to lost something before we really gonna backup everything.

I have two external hard drives. One that I use and one that is the backup.
On my pc I have a folder called new audio and new video.
After a week I bring it over to my external "work" harddisk.
At the same time I do it also to the backup external.
Not earlier, but after the copy to the external, I delete it from my pc.
If you do it this way every time, it can't go wrong.

Sometimes I do a shift-delete for a file. Then you can't find it back in the recycle bin.
A good programm to get the data back for me is Winundelete: http://www.winundelete.com
It's a good and also it works verry fast.

Deleted Files Recovery - Supported Situations

Recovers files deleted even after you have emptied the Recycle Bin.
Recovers files deleted bypassing Recycle Bin.
Recovers files deleted accidentally from a network share.
Recovers files deleted from the DOS command prompt.
Recovers files deleted when you press Shift+Delete on the keyboard.
Recovers files deleted when you use Move or Cut command.
Recovers files deleted in other applications or by viruses.
Even recovers files deleted before you installed WinUndelete.

Hope it helps for you.

Best regards,

Dj Anthony

For months I've been planning to get a Buffalo Linkstation network drive for automatic back-up...I just never got around to actually buying it.

Thanks for reminding me, I'm getting one TODAY :)

My WD was acting wierd one day then I said time to back up. That drive eventually died. I carry a back up drive at every show now. I update it as often as I can.

Don't forget you might still have a warranty on the drive. I was able to get a replacement.

I am sorry for your loss as we know how much time goes into getting the collection ripped and tagged. I have advocated many times how important it is to backup your gig material no less than three copies on three separate hard drives. A lifes work can disappear in an instant in fact i have 7 hard drives, some may say that this is extreme but knowing DJ s who have had three drives go down in the same week its not something to take for granted, let us all learn from this. My Broadband provider Virgin allow unlimited backup on XXL as part of there free add ons, food for thought. Most important stuff i have on 10gb dvds.

Hope you get your stuff retrieved.

Yeah, that's got to hurt alot!

I've got a back up that I take to gigs with me, just in case. But now I'm thinking about ANOTHER backup. What happens if I get robbed when I'm out working? I don't think they'd give me my backup hard drive back! But if I leave it at home (or in a bank vault) then I screwed if the first one breaks at a gig.

Also, this is the software that I'm using to keep my hard drive backed up.

http://download.cnet.com/SyncBack-Freeware/3000-2242_4-10413802.html?tag=mncol

It's free and it keeps everything the same on both drives. It can also sync some folders in particular and all kinds of other complicated stuff.

I have been there, done that and got the T-shirt. (Learned the hard way)

All hard drives will fail, they are like a candle..... Some will burn longer than others but they will all burn out.
Hopefully solid state hard drive prices will continue to fall, at this point they are way out of my budget but I predict today's hard drive will be follow the path of the 8-track player in a few years.

As for my back up technique I have two machines that I keep in constant synch and they are updated daily if there have been any changes. I have a third back up (portable drives) which are kept at a different location just in case I had a fire, flood, or crazed meth head steal my machines at home. (I update the portables drives weekly)

~R~ (The R stands for REALLY paranoid.

Sorry to hear about your loss!!! most of the time in my experence in HD failures it comes from the power supply circut. The platters are fine but the power circuts get fried from constant use!! I would start there!! fixed a few my self long enough to get the data off

I know this may sound old school here but I have 2 back up methods One my Segate Free agent 1.5Tb that only gets powered on when I am backing anything up.

Then I have Duel Layer DVD's Yeah its a pain to do but I did it for last resort back ups!!! I back up my music on the HD 2 times a month and on DVD once a month!! I feel its better to have plan A and plan B......

Like I siad sorry this happened to you!! and hope you get your music

JIMMYB let's play "What If"

You have a major crash one hour before you need to jump into your Ford Pinto and head off to the show.

What if?

(1) Your cable company is down.

(2) The server in Bombay India is down because of political unrest.

(3) Both your connection and the server are working great but you have an hour to download a TERABYTE of information. (Not going to happen)

I use my private server for a lot of things including backing up important documents that I won't need in the next hour. I personally don't think this is the best option for music / video.

One TB drives are $99 dollars here in the US.
