Topic: NEWB Subwoofer question

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

I have a Yamaha MG12-4FX mixing board, 2 Yamaha BR15 Speakers, and a QSC RMX2450 amp. How do I connect a powered subwoofer to this system. I figured it would be easier than another amp and crossove (which I know nothing about). Thanks for the help.

Hi mate

Most powered subs wil provide you with connection information. Your choices are usually to piggyback the mixers output to your amp and sub. Some mixers have a built in sub output or a booth output that you can hook a sub into to give you control over the sub's output. Once you decide what sub you are considering if you post the make and model number and I can help with the hookup.

I just bought the Yamaha MSR800W 15" Powered Subwoofer. The guy at the store told me to connect 2x stereo 1/4" cables to the 2x main outputs on the mixer, then to a "Y" mono into the sub. My mains are plugged into the XLR main out which will share the same channel 1/4" output. I am in Japan and bought this in Tokyo at a pretty reputable place. Does this sound like it will work. I would try now but sub won't be delivered for a few days. If I bought 2 subs I guess I could run them from the main output to the amp and the mains out of the amp. But I only bought one.

Actually, I just looked at the owners manaual online and the sub doesn't have 1/4" connections, only XLR.

Hi Mate
Should work but depending on how your mixer is wired internaly you could end up with a mono signal from boath outputs(xlr and jack). you can get cables which have jack on one end and xlr on the other so only having xlr on the sub should not be a problem.
Do you have a separate booth or monitor output on your mixer that you dont currently use? If so you could connect the sub to iether of these and have separate level control over the sub and mains which would be usefull.

There is a C-R out which is for monitor left and right that uses 1/4" jacks. If I use these I should not need a crossover correct? And if I use the monitor jacks my headphones are controled by the same volume adjustment as the monitors. If it's not one thing it's another.

If you go to the yamaha website (above) and type the following in the search field, the user manuals come up for the sub and mixer.

Mixer - MG12/4FX
Sub - MSR800W

Let me ask you if this would work. Main out from mixer to both channel on sub, out of sub to amp, main speakers out from amp. This is how yamaha says to do it with powered speakers (obviously minus the amp.) Seems like it would work but don't want to smoke anything.

Hi mate

Looking at the manual for the sub you can connect the main output from your mixer to the INPUT/THRU A/B connections on the sub. Connect your amp to the OUTPUT/ HIGH PASS connections on the sub. Nice and easy.

Once you have the sub hooked up slowly adjust the level control until the sub becomes audible but not overbearing. I would suggest the crossover frequency control is left set at 100Hz.

Have fun

That's what I thought I should do. I have asked other places and I keep getting told I need a crossover. With that sub I didn't think I needed one since it has a high pass out. I will get my sub delivered from Tokyo on Thursday and I will give it a shot. I have a gig on Saturday and I will let you know how it works out.

The MSR880W sub worked perfect routing the ST Out from mixer to sub input, then out from the subs thru to amp and out to speakers. What a diference the sub made. Thanks for all the help.
