My advice would be if you plan on doing video would be don't buy a laptop.
It's kind of like a family of five buying a 2 door Chevy when they really needed that SUV with lots of space. Laptops are fine for audio only, doing video is a another thing all together.
If you are sure you must have a laptop then I can't make any suggestions and can only wish you luck.

I agree. Laptops are brill for audio but as most don't have decent on-board graphics (apart form some of the expensive Sony ones) I would concur with Renee that a desktop with a dedicated GPU is what you need.
No point wasting money on something that won't do the job properly.
If you are going to play from VOB files then the 7200rpm SATA hard drive in a desktop is also an advantage. Most laptops still have 2.5" 5400rpm ones which don't give the same performance.

Desktops run smoother. There is more room inside and better circulation comapered to a laptop. A laptop has all the components cramped up. Thats why you have Usb problems. Usb drops outs... Bad air circulation

Thank you for the VERY useful input. I will be choosing a desktop instead! Still, any useful tips on any particular models? Portability is always an issue, the smaller the better...Thanks VDJ guys...may you all have excellent DJ Karma

Thanks Guys?..... I need to update my photo BIG TIME or get a fresh shave.
First, computers brands are like Ford VS Chevy....one person's dream is another persons nightmare. I've had the best luck with Dell computers but I've read some folks here would like to make a boat anchor out of their Dell computer. I have the Dell XPS 420 which is a HUGE computer, I can barely lift the thing, It's heavy because I have three hard drives, the primary drive dedicated to the OS and (2) 1 TB drives for video. (I don't want to deal with portable USB drives other than at home for back-up purposes)
You need to keep in mind your 10 meg audio file of the same song in video (Mpeg-2) will cost you about 150 megs of space. You can cut that down by using Mp4 but that's another whole topic. I also have an upgraded power supply to run it all and good fans to keep it as cool as possible. My advice again would be the same as trying to use a laptop, portability should take a back seat to functionality. Normally I'd say size doesn't matter but it does in this case.
And really we can all use exercise and a little heavy lifting. :-)

If you are building a Desktop for Video DJ'ing and are in need of protability look into rack cases.
http://stores.shop.ebay.ca/RackBuy-PLINKUSA-Net-RackOutlet__W0QQ_armrsZ1
That's where I bought mine from. Very reasonable prices.
I mounted it in a SKB DJ-Capsule by removing the ears from the very front of the case - remounting them about 1/3 of the way down the case and then using the part that jutted out from the capsule as a shelf for the micro-keyboard and trackball.

I have to agree that a rackmount aluminum desktop is the way to go for video. My rackmount use 8 1TB drives. My backup drives are built in. If I had to recommend a laptop it would have to be alienware. They are hardcore gaming laptops. Do not know if anyone has used one for DJing though.

I have used a toshiba satellite 305D laptop with XP loaded with numark VV system for straight 21 hrs on a fund raiser, It survived the ordeal no problems. I now use a custom built dell precision laptop with intel dual core, 4 G RAM 300 G HD. This is a desktop replacement laptop and so far no problems. They loaded it with XP and gave me a vista CD.

As a heavy user of the Shuttle sn20p for many years, i have to say this was the best PC i have ever bought.
however, im looking to upgrade my gig system to quad core, and keep my sn25 in my livingroom...
ive been looking at this...
http://www.ciao.co.uk/Shuttle_XPC_Prima_Series_SX48P2_Deluxe_no_CPU__6988630
its the same shape as the sn25, so it will fit the same carry-bag (or in the same flightcase, if its hidden in the back of your rack)
the CPU and mem out of my sn25 are out of date now, but i'll do as i did before..
Buy new barebones, get basic components, then upgrade as prices drop :)

Which one? My SLI was $4199, but this is for gaming. The VDJ one was $1600 but I got in on sale at Best Buy for $1249 and it kicks @$$ in graphics intensive programs like VDJ.

Laptops aren't that far behind anymore. I purchased a Puma based system.....Acer Aspire 6530 from Newegg for $700
Specs
Dual core 2.2GHz
4GB DDR2
360 HDD
Ati Radeon HD3650 with 1GB GDDR2 dedicated Ram
DVD-RW
16" wide screen
You could also buy a Q9000 quad core system with a ATI HD4870X2 for around $2k....I have seen people run video on allot less power than that. The also have a Q9000 with an ATI HD4870 open box for $1250
So as you can see Laptops are not that far behind in terms of video as they used to be.

Here's a good source for top gaming laptop computers at reasonable cost that can do the job for video & Karaoke mixing with no problems, I know I bought one and use it for my gigs.
The main thing to consider when using a laptop is to keep it cool even a desktop can give you problems, slow down, drop outs video/audio if it over heats, so a laptop cooling pad is essential for longevity and preformance.
This is what I use with no problems
01. Xp-pro os
02. Micro Express JFL92 With Intel T9500 Duo 2.6 GHz
03. nVidia Geforce 8600 GT 512 Mem Video Card
04. 4 Gig Mem
05. 7200 rpm int. Drive
06. 7200 rpm ext. Drive G-Tech for Video Firewire
07. 7200 rpm ext. Drive G-Tech for Audio Usb
08. Antec Laptop Cooler (Your Insurance Policy)
09. E-MU 1616M PCI Sound Card Thru Express Port
10. M-Audio NRV10 Mixer for Live Pref. Or Karaoke
11. Hercules Mk2 Controller (Mixing)
12. iTouch for BackUp & Int.Swap Drive
13. SIIG 8-Port VGA Video Splitter

If you want to buy a laptop to use with VDJ it doesnt have to be a gaming laptop. Gaming laptops are usually overpriced and not necessarily better for VDJ (no offence DJ RuDe). Main features to look for would be fast CPU, large hard drive(s), ATI video card with S-video and other outputs.
