Topic: Projectors: Your Input Please

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

A friend of mine, a bar owner, asked for my input on projectors. I had to plead ignorance because
im not up to date with this sort of technology.
I am aware that now a days they come with pretty much anything and everything including a sink
and microwave.

This projector would be used for standard bar use, music videos, fights, sideshows, etc. but it
would be fixed in an area where the ceiling is really low (about 8 feet high) and it would have
very dim lighting.
What would you recommend without breaking the bank? He is looking for something with decent
picture quality for a 4 to 5 foot wide screen. I read that some have internal speakers wich would
be useless in this case.
Is there a model that would be considered a steal or a great deal for this kind of application?

if it's only going to have a 4 to 5 foot screen (assuming you mean diagonally) a better idea would be to get a flat panel tv and mount it on the wall. projectors are good but when you consider that you'll have to replace the lamp every year to year and a half then its more cost effective in the long run to buy a flat panel tv.

Yup, WCC has it right. for something as small as 4-5 feet diagonal a flat panel will be more cost effective in the long run and less problematic.

Your friend should be looking at projectors when he's considering 7-8 feet or more diagonal. At least when they start producing projectors with LED or Laser technology, the bulbs will be less of a factor.

you can get a 47" lcd for $1000 or less usd. factor in the replacement price of a projector bulb anywhere from $300 - $20,000 and how often you will replace it the lcd will pay for itself in less than 6 months. specially if its gonna be on all the time.

I have been using a Dell Powerpoint Projector and it works great about $1,200. My advice is look at what inputs your projector has vs what outputs your computer or possible outputs a guest dj may have because I started out thinking that I could go to a venue and just plug and play using the VGA output with a VGA to RGB adaptor and found out quilkly that most clubs are using composite (YELLOW RCA) and then just plug in to an RF adapter so they can use coax so they can run multiple TVs. To solve that problem I bought a PC to TV converter from Radio Shack. Also FYI for your club owner, that just cause a projector is cheap DOES NOT mean that a replacement bulb is cheap. So checking bulb cost is very important

LCD monitors would be a much wiser investment at that picture size. You could buy two LCD monitors and save money in the long run. Unless you can come across a good deal on a used projector, but the price of replacement lamps is a bite in the a$$.

And the ceiling height is also a consideration; if it is only 8 feet then the projector will be at 7 1/2 feet or lower depending on the mounting hardware used. I would rather take my chances with a monitor hanging high on the wall than have a projector hanging low in the room with a bunch of sauced, rowdy football fans. Think of how many poor gents stick their hands in the ceiling fan when they jump up and start raising hell about the game, now imagine the projector taking that shot. Not good.

Good luck on the project.

Have to agree with the monitor idea. Even 50" monitors are becoming v afordable now especialy if a unit not speced for fullHD will do the job as they are dropping in price all the time.
