just make sure all the kids have seen the movie IT before the gig and then surround yourself with clowns.

If theres a bunch of kids running around causing chaos and I have some spare time before playing, I'll let the older ones have a turn at scratching. Explain to them the gear is very expensive, not a toy, and its about moving it as gently as possible to still make the noise, throw some headphones on them with a quiet monitor and let them have a turn. Then the younger ones will want a turn, so line them up and let them have a go each. I've found they understand when you say no more playing, time for me to work now. The parents appreciate you've kept them amused for 15 mins and the kids will listen to you because you've gained some respect.

I had the same problem. Stopping the music gets everyones attention very fast and I embarrass the kid or kids giving me a hard time by talking on the microphone.

Easy just call the parents whose children is running about to the booth or make scary faces to the kids so they will sit still..lol
Or jimmy vodka jellies will do the trick;)

Do like Captain Nemo did with the Nautilus Sub against the attacking natives. Numbing HIGH VOLTAGE. The kids would get zapped when they touch your stuff. Keep in mind you would need to wear special shoes so you don't get shocked too. Hehehehehehehe

Kids can smell fear from a mile away. I have been doing school dances for over 20 years and the only thing that got broke was some lights when I got rushed by a few hundred kids when doing a contest.
If you show fear the kids will rule. I just attended a father/daughter dance and the DJ was overrun by the girls. I had done a father/daughter dance the month before for 300 screaming girls k-8 and had not problems. It is all about knowing how to control the kids and being a big kid yourself doesn't hurt. You need to keep them entertained and there are all sorts of tricks for doing that.

or you could just set up the electrified security fence I mentioned earlier, lol. cheap, easy to move, keeps them out of your gear....I think that covers all the problems, lol. Honestly though, if I have kids running around me when I am doing a gig I get on the mic and make an announcement for all parents to please keep their children away from the equipment (and a clause in the contract doesn't hurt either).
Michael
*edit* damn Kama, you posted while I was typing, lol. the fence comment was to the person above you. now I haven't really done any school functions, or anything like that so I haven't really had that problem yet. (thank god)

Get a recording of the "misquito ring tone." It is a tone with a frequency of about 19 kHz I think. Just outside of the hearing range of most people over 20. Kids can hear it well and it can be very annoying to them if played loud. You can see the waveform in VDJ, but you don't hear it when you play it... They sure do though!
I haven't used it to get rid of kids necessarily, but to get their attention. It works if your equipment can perform those high frequencies.

WOW... interesting approach to parenting skills...
I always ask if there are going to be kids at the party and what ages. If they are young - under 10 - then I make sure that early on i play "SpongeBob Squarepants" and have one or two Nickelodean theme songs handy... that puts them on the dance floor. I also bring a few inflatable guitars and mics for them to play with. For the kids that want to play around the booth, I make eye contact on thier level and tell them that the booth can get hot and I don't want them to get burned... works every time.
Parents are always helpful.
Just my two cents,
Jay

Jay, I think that is the angle most of us are taking. We are NOT THE KIDS PARENTS. Nor, are we hired as baby sitters.
