Currently my music videos are in mpg 1 format, can you guy\'s tell me if there is anything better to convert them to?

i always make them to mpg2, try that for future stuff charlie if your not stuck for space, but as you probably find out everyone has there own favorite file type.

Charlie be sure you do NOT convert your current files (Mpeg1's to Mpeg2). (As talya said, "in the future"
You will not gain anything and you will waste drive space. The only time you might want to convert Mpeg1 to 2 would be to make it DVD compliant.
Truth be told Mpeg1 is actually better than 2 as far as quality but only at LOW bitrates. Mpeg1 was released in the early 90's and then replaced with Mpeg 2 several years later. The quality of Mpeg1 can be compared to the old VCR analog tape where Mpeg2 would be DVD quality.
Mpeg4 is what most use if they re-code at all. I don't think you would gain anything converting your current Mpeg1 files and you may end up with something less than what you had. Personally I use 95% Mpeg2/Vob with no compression. I don't use a laptop or external drives so storage is not an issue for me.

Oh right,
well here's the situation, I wanted to try out Serato Scratch Live with Video SL plugin so I bought it and istalled it however I can't play back my music videos because Serato dosn't support mpg 1 or 2. Serato supports the file types shown below.
I need to make sure my videos work with both Serato and VDJ and I want to keep the quality also, what do you think?
- MOV
- MP4
- M4A
- AVI
- FLV
- MPG
- MPEG
- DV

Here is a post that may help with the Serato vs DVJ comparison.

Look for the post from "low-fat-al" (nice work).

Vob and Mpeg2 ARE the same thing and he can't use either one. What ever happend to ANDREW87, he was my video expert. He's forgort more about video and formats than I'll ever learn. :-(

I will continue with this but for now I can't get ext disply to work after extending the desktop for some reason however before this i did get video sl to work however without a single video that was copatable i couldn't test it but the second display was easier to setup.
Sorted it.
Can someone tell me why you can't use the expand button in the middle of the window? and why you have to stretch?

that doesnt make sense to me. MPEG is the standard "wrapper" for both mpeg1 and mpeg2.. and mpeg2 plays EVERYWHERE.

Well it's true however they say there going to try and support mpg 1 and 2 at a later date.
Seems like basic stuff there falling behind on

If you want to convert Mpeg-1 to something else, well maybe DivX or XVid could be the answer, but I do not change those. In the future you could rip your dvds in VOB directly, this has 2 main reasons: 1.- It's DVD quality 2.- Only has to copy from DVD 1:1 so takes about 10 minutes to rip a full DVD, while any ripper could take about 2 or 3 hours to ripp a DVD in MPEG-2, 4 or DivX. If time is money, best is to keep DVD quality in VOB or MPEG-2. Hard disks are cheaper than waiting long time were ripping dvds.
The only way I would change a VOB or MPEG-2 file is because of audio quality, if I'm going to ripp, then I go for MPEG-4 or DivX or MKV. Let audio in 192kbps vbr or cbr 320, and 720x480 video quality (for NTSC) or 720x576 (for PAL sources).

Im not sure but I was told Serrato was designed originally for Mac around the quicktime movie format which is mp4...I don't think mpg1 or 2 are native formats for MAcs

This is what Serato had to say:
Hello Charlie,
Thank you for choosing Scratch Live. Those as you have found are unsupported file types. I don't see any plans in the immediate future to add support for those file types. We do have a good program called Handbrake which can convert those files. There is also a preset we made on the same page you download from. It will keep all the videos looking good for you. The only thing you'll need to change is the de-interlace setting. You will want to set that to slow.

Hello Charlie,
Thank you for purchasing Scratch Live and Video SL.
Supporting MPEG 1 and 2 files is definitely on the "things to do" list but I cannot give you any sort of time line.
Serato needs to develop their own decoding application like Quicktime in order to play these files in Video SL and
this is not an easy task. Keep in mind, you can convert your mpeg 1 and 2 files to mpeg 4 format for now and always keep your original mpegs for when VSL is compatible with that format. I know its not an easy task but unfortunately that is where we're at with the technology at this time.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best regards,
Zach Stone

Hello Charlie, thanks for using our products.
Serato has not let us know if or when they will support mpeg 1 and 2 . As of now the best format to use would be MP4 Video Files. We recommend using our preset with a program called handbrake to convert files. You can find info on Handbrake here: PC: http://scratchlive.net/articles/video-sl/1939/
MAC: http://scratchlive.net/howtos/video-sl/1937/
