Topic: VDJ / RMX back up help...

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Hi guys, newbie using the equioment but going to buy a laptop next wednesday to run vdj - dont know what one yet, and set on getting the hercules rxm as it sounds a good controller for pub/wedding gigs. As it runs from usb power tho, what can I have on standby just incase it does crash ? obviusly if the laptop goes down then so will the hercules and I will be using that. Any ideas ? If the hercules came with main power i would just hook my ipod to another channel but its not ??

p.s. i dont think i explained that very well - sorry....any help appreciated tho..

Hello idjmark,

I see 2 back up solutions:

1) Bullet proof solution: you take an analog console where you connect both the output 1-2 of DJ Console Rmx and the back up source, and you connect this analog console to the public address amplifier.
In case of accident, you just push on play on your back up player (iPod, CD player), and you avoid a blank.
You can use a small analog console (to save space on the table) as Xenyx 502 http://www.behringer.de/EN/Products/502.aspx .

2) Simpler solution, if you don't use the audio inputs of your DJ Console Rmx:
Connect your backup source on DJ Console Rmx input 1-2, open DJ Console Rmx control panel and go to the advanced tab, and activate the setting "mix line input 1-2 with the USB streaming on output 1-2".
In case of accident, you just push on play on your back up player (iPod, CD player), and you avoid a blank.
The limit of this solution is that, it would be OK if VirtualDJ crashed of froze and stopped playing sound, but it would not work if the crash made a sound loop (as the DJ Console Rmx mix the DJ software sound with your backup sound, it works only if the DJ software is mute).

I never met a problem with VirtualDJ crashing in a party (but I am conservdon't update the computer environment, I keep the same release of VirtualDJ for more than 6 months, and I never update the operating system - Mac OS updates would be too dangerous, seeing how Window Service Pack updates can deeply change and damage a Windows computer), but I had once a blank accident in a party: a kid pulled out the USB cable of the DJ Console Mk2 in a wedding party, so I am now more careful in keeping all wires out of reach.

PS: even if the DJ Console Rmx had an independant power supply, it would not change anything, since if the computer crashes, it may crash the DJ Console Rmx also, as the lack of power on the USB is not the main issue in case of crash. If you want to use the Rmx as if it had an independant power supply, you can connect the DJ Console Rmx to a USB hub which has its own power adapter (I always use a good USB hub).

ah....good thinking. Im not so up to speed with solution 2 but solution 1 is just basically :

take an old 2 channel mixer.....put the output from the rmx to one channel and the backup to the second channel. Then run the old mixer to the powered speakers ?? Then if vdj does crash on me I just flick the crossfader of the old mixer to channel 2 and play my backup ??

so im effectivly taking 2 mixers to every gig and a spare cd / ipod input ??

Thankyou very much for your help !! :-)

Hi,

I have an RMX. First thing to know is that you shoild always plug the RMX in to a mixer before going to your amp.

2 main reasons:

1. Mic input on RMX is pants
2. Gives you options for other inputs

I have a Q-SD mixer which has a built in SD card player. This is a compact solution and negates the need for buying CD players etc. Plus you only ever need to play 1 or 2 tracks while you restart laptop/VDJ.

Hope this helps,

Roy

it does gadget man - that is the solution - thanks mate !!

roy, as you can get a hercules rmx mounting kit and the q-sd mixer is also 19"...is it conceivable or workable to mount them in the same rackable carry case ?

i got my lappy and rmx in a flight case combined and it is a bit weighty, for those long flights of stairs, both up and down into venues.

mind it knocks people out the way like skittles when it catches them... lol

If you're looking for an inexpensive back-up, I have my RMX racked in a SBK Case with the Cortex MIX-R1U. Plug in my zune just in case. I chose this one because of the variety of outputs it had.
