This is just a little perception I noticed at my last video gig.
I have full hd projector with 1920x1080 output but 99% of my videos are dvd-quality (800x600).
For several years I have scaled the output down to 800x600 just because someone (a guy at television shop) said that one should let the graphic card scale resolution down to dvd quality instead of projector or tv - for better output quality.
On last gig I accidentally set the projector output resolution to maximum (1920x1080). Then during video translation I got my jaw dropped whaat??? I used satellite video transition and saw that the smaller scaled video screens during the transition actually have HD resolution and it looked very very sharp and cool....
So one should actually put always the output resolution to max!
Maybe this info helps someone else too :)

You should ideally set your output to match the capabilities of your display. The only reason to set it lower is for performance reasons (I.e: Your computer is not powerful enough to cope with displaying HD resolution.)
