Hi Peeps.
I am after some advice with video encoding & programs to encode.
I have been ripping all my music video from original DVDs to MPEG-2. the program i have been doing this with is called "TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 2.0" it is a very good program to rip with. The picture & the sound is supperb. here is the output format settings:
"Video : MPEG-2 Video (MP@ML), 720x576, 25fps, PAL 16:9, Interlace(BottomFirst), 7000kb/s"
"Audio : Linear PCM, 48000 Hz, Stereo, 16 bit 1536 Kb/s"
This Program as done the job very well. the only downside is that the files are very big (Between 250MB-400MB +) now I have 1TB Harddrive full of music video. I have no space left on my Harddrive. I Have try to encoding videos with some program of the net into divx, avi, wma. but the picture as been to pixelated &/or the sound as not been 100%.
So im after some advice with which is the best program to encoding with (Quick & Simple). & the best format to encoding too with out over powering the CPU on my laptop when the videos are loading into VDJ...
Any help will be gratefull. ThanX....

first, I would continue ripping your videos into as you have been doing.. This way you always have access to the original/best quality..
make them your "original" files and archive them on a server type external hard drive case (multiple drive bays)
second, I would look at then converting your videos to MP4 (h.264), but make sure your computer can handle them..
IE: mpeg2 videos are decompressed by your video card.. If you start using a different format you may see an increase in CPU usage (which may cause glitches and dropouts)
as to the type of software, hopefully other users can chime in.. I still havent filled up my drives yet, so havent had to make a final decision on what I'm going to use for converting..

I just found this on the Prodj.com forum..

For example, the properties for Brian Setzer's "In The Mood" video from Promo Only is:
Video: MPEG2 Video 720x480 (4:3) 29.97fps 5000Kbps
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 224Kbps
and it's 127mb is vob[mpg] file size.
I use TMPG Express 4 to make my vob/mpg to mp4 conversions. It is a very powerful program and its filters can adjust many facets of the original video before conversion, including audio uniformization (very different from normalization) and gives a really superb quality .mp4 file.
Because I use the H264 codec at a variable bit rate (3000 ~ 12,000 kbs) at 640 x 480 29.97 fps, and the audio at ACC 44.1mHz 256kbs in 2 pass mode, the conversion process takes an enormous amount of time however its batch file process allows me to do hundreds of files at once.
Using TMPG Express, the equal-to-vob/mpg visual and audio quality .mp4 file for this particular video file is 77.7mb, a little bit larger and less compression than many others.

I too am converting VOB files to mp4 to save space. After doing some research, I decided to use MPEG4-part 2 encoding. It uses much less CPU to decode than H.264 AVC, and still gives a vast improvement in file size.
I use SUPER, which is a freeware frontend to FFmpeg. I am encoding video at 4032 kbps, high quality and top quality. Audio is 48kHz at 256kbps.
So far performance in VDJ has been excellent, with fast load times and no freezes.
Good luck with your project!

Steve, I also use TMPGEnc MPEG Editor and have in the past always ripped to VOB. Lately I use the MP4 format included with this product. It cuts the video sizes way down. They seem to play ok too.
This might be the way I go. Promo Only uses MP4 also. I'll be mixing between formats for a while to compare.
I subscribe to Promo Only and rip the DVDs with DJExtractor. It's a nice app. since it downloads the P.O. song listings and I don't have to type song titles and artist names.
Good luck.

Avoid 29fps, use 24. heres a reference so I dont have to explain it :)
