what is the trick with the Gain buttons???
on most settings, once the track has been read by the software, the Gain setting goes hay-wire!! often becoming much louder before i realise and adjust the relevant Gain knob... is this normal or is there a "best" setting that stops this wee problemo???
Thanx again

no offence but have you tried the user manual??? this explains a lot about the gain functions. also try changing your auto gain functions. autogain will turn the volume of one track up to match that of the other.
it may seem like its a lot louder but believe me, its not. visually yes, audibly no.

I'm sorry, but I have to Ditto that comment.. :-)
I realize your new and excited.. I was the same way.. I did a quick cursory flip through of the manual, and then got upset when a bunch of things didnt work right for me..
after about the third time of people telling me where in the manual the answer lay.. I finally hunkered down, and went thru the manual PAGE BY PAGE and tried out all the features and options..
so I would recommend that be your first goal..
go thru the manual and REALLY learn how VDJ works.. test EVERYTHING.. try all the options..
you will be amazed at the problems you were having will start to go away..
:-)

Hi all. oh i did laugh...
Yes, i have read the manual. i'm one ov those very rare women who actually reads all the manuals... but the RMX manual doesn't discribe the Gain control knob, they just talk about setting the output levels but no mention ov the Gain control.
In fact the only reference to said Knob is in the "Top Face Overview" diagram (on Page 6/32 jus to prove i have read it!!!)
The problem i am experiencing seems to be a Software to Hardware communication problem. The software reads the track info and sets the gain position, However, this may not be at the same setting point as the actual Gain knob on the RMX i'm using, so when i touch the knob the RMX it "tells" the software that the gain is set at a certain level and the software then boosts (or equalises) the level "in the computer" which makes it come out the speakers louder...!!!
Phew. i hope thats clear (ish) now
Any ideas???

It's the Virtual DJ Manual you need to read...
The PDF should be in your Virtual DJ folder in your "My Documents" folder.
Cheers,
Roy

Seana, Gain is a term used in describing the amount of action output from a given device. Example: If you use an EQ often there are "Gain" controls for the output. It basically describes the "attack" from the EQ. The same theory is applied to VDJ. Gain is the amount of attack the program/hardware is applying to the output. Try not to go over +2% and you should be OK.

When loading a song for the first time, it needs to be loaded in full before the correct gain setting will be determined.
If you start it playing before it has completed loading, then the gain may be incorrect initially and the song will be either louder or quieter than it should be.
Once the loading has completed, the correct gain will be known and set, which will may result in a sudden jump in gain.
To avoid this, you should allow songs that you have never played before to load in full before playing them.

yes, tried that. Its better but there is still an occasional jump in volume... i've started allowing for a wee bit ov fiddling time before bringing in the new track and this seems to be enough to keep the volume levels correct.
As for leaving the Gain knob on about 2%, the best setting seems to be just less than 50%!!! This setting allows for the jump in levels with only a small correction needed to the volume slider for the required deck.
Thanx for all your help (again)
Big LOUD Love to you all...

you could always turn off autogain and just work the mix in your headphones prior to the actual mix. tweak your gain in the phones and you should be good to go once you mix.

not sure if i can turn off Auto-Gain...
only using VDJ5 Limited edition.
Good thinking though..

im sure you can still turn it off, goto config/settings....i think.
Inviato Sat 20 Feb 10 @ 12:56 pm
50% is actually zero Seana. There is both a positive and a negative amount of gain. JP's suggestion for the VDJ setting is dead on. My mistake, I thought you were talking the output gain knobs from the RMX. Those I would not tweek past +2% but, if -2% works then good for you figuring it out all by your lonesome....
Inviato Sat 20 Feb 10 @ 2:59 pm
oh yes your right... it is + and -.
i have been setting it at "roughly" zero then...
No, to the Config button as it doesn't exist on the VDJ5LE version i am using at the mo... it just gives the option to download the full version for 30 days.
I'll defo get the Pro software soon though then i can CONFIG to my hearts desires!!!
Big (UNCONFIGED) love
