Hey everyone whats up? I'm looking to buy a PA system and honestly I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with the amount of speakers and amps on the market. I just received an offer to play a venue of around 300 people for a Frat social in my town. The area is indoors (in a barn) and is about the size of a high-school gym. I would like to keep my budget at or around $500 if possible but would be willing to spend more. I do realize though that in this industry you get what you pay for and as far as having a good PA goes I feel it is a top priority. Mobility is also an issue. Im Far from an expert on this topic and would greatly appreciate any advice the DJ community could offer me. Thanks guys! peace!

To dj a party for 300 people.. 500 bucks is nothing. If you cant afford much, just rent a system... You need 2 speakers and two bass bottoms. You can buy 2 good powered 15 inch speakers for 799 and then you need two bass bottoms. For bass bottoms, i recomend anything that can push 600watts or more in " RMS ". If your going to buy something soon, Your new budget is now 1800 bucks plus....

Oops I ment to say between $500-$1k, again i realize this might not be enough, I think I want to stay away from powered speakers if possible also.

If you want to stay away from Powered speakers.. Buy from the carvin website.. They sell very good speakers tops. They bass bottoms are nice but.. Its kind of dumb to have a bass bottoms impedance @ 8 ohms.. The price is great but i would call them up and ask them if they can switch the woofer to a 4 ohms. An amp pushing alot of watts in 8ohms will cost you more than an amp with higher watts in 4ohms.

Your best bet is to rent speakers first and then save money to buy something good. Your going to end up buying something that sucks and you wont be able to sell it for something better.

I have 2 amps, one is 500 watts per channel at 8 Ohms, the other is 1500 per channel at 8 Ohms. Thank you for the advise, you always help others.

+1 on the rentals. This way you can test different speakers out to see what you will like/need. Saves you $ in the long run as opposed to buying something and not having it work out.

I'm a big fan of the FBT Maxx4a's but they're priced higher than your budget and they are powered. That being said I would avoid the cheaper speakers. If you're serious about DJing and are in it for the long run then spend a bit more. The higher priced speakers will last longer, sound better and won't overheat and shut down on you.

This is my current system. I have 2 Carvin PM 15 speaker tops that push 400 watts RMs and 2 JBL MPro 418s Subwoofers that push 600 watts RMS, 2400 watts peak.. For my top speakers, i am using a QSC plx 2402 amp. For the subwwofers, I am using a PLX 3002. Since my subs Impedance is 4 OHms. My amp pushes 900 watts RMs. My system kicks.
One great thing about my Carvin speakers is.. If the tweeters blow, i can use any 1-3/8” x 18 TPI screw on. Im using Pyramid tweeters. Believe it or not, Pyramid makes very good tweeters for a cheap price. 20 bucks just to replace them.

Hey guys thanks for all the feedback you all rock! Caliente thanks for the info regarding the difference between 8 and 4 ohms subs, i hadn't really considered that (and nice specs man wow!). Ive got until April 16th before the gig so I'm going to explore every option. The websites you all suggested seemed really legit as well. Also I'm going to Guitar Center this weekend to see what they can offer me. As far as renting goes I don't think there are a lot of options in my area but I will do some research on that as well. I'm Super excited about all this though, It will be my first time playing a venue of this size and hopefully will mark my transition out of the house party scene. lol been a rough couple months, and wow if I only was getting paid for every time a girl asked me to play Ke$ha =D. Anyways being a new DJ in my area I don't have a lot of contacts yet so I really appreciate being a part of an online DJ Community! Thanks again
