Topic: Hello, new DJ in the house

Greetings to everybody. I've been using Virtual DJ for almost a year now. Up to this point, the only equipment I have is my laptop and a mixer, but I'm ready to step my game up to using turntables. Can someone give me a basic overview of everything I need to be able to make this transition? I see that VirtualDJ has an interface similar to Serato Scratchbox Live, so I just need to know how I can make this happen. Thanks for your time.

Someone paid for it, but it wasn't me. lol I got it from another DJ last year.
 
You have three main choices: Turntables, CD or MIDI:

The first two require more specialist soundcards and timecoded vinyl/CD's that in turn send a signal to the software which then controls audio file loaded.

The final option, MIDI, uses an interface which directly controls the software and does not need the external turntables or CD players.

Some say this is a budget way forward, but many MIDI controllers now are of good quality and respond just as well platters.

The choice is yours, but here's one route that could get you to where you want to get to:

Buy something like the Hercules RMX, this is a MIDI controller and soundcard all in one and comes bundled with an LE version of Virtual DJ (so you can stop using that other DJ's version).

Because of the soundcard and construction of the unit, you then have the option to connect turntables or CD players so that you can experiment with timecodes. If it dosn't work for you, you can go straight back to the MIDI interface. If it goes well you can trade the RMX in for a dedicated soundcard for your timecodes...

You will need the Pro version to use timecodes and the RMX gives you a cheap upgrade option to Pro. So it's a win, win all round.

GadgetMan, thank you very much for your information. There's a device out on the market right now that I'm considering. It's called the MixDeck and it's made by Numark. It's pretty much an all in one unit with a mixer and turntables. It connects to the laptop via a USB cable. The overview says you can use the MIDI controllers and map it to pretty much any DJ software. Buying that would actually be cheaper that getting two separate turntables.
 
One other thing: You said that using turntables would require timecodes and a specialist soundcard. I see that I can download the timecodes for free here on this site. I was thinking that if I did that, the only other thing I would need is that Virtual Vinyl interface. Let me know if this is correct or not. Thanks.
 
For the Mix Deck you won't need the timecodes (I believe) as the platters are MIDI, but you also get the flexibility of playing CD's as well as MP3's via VDJ - I'll be corrected if I am wrong.

For turntables & CDJ types you have Virtual Vinyl and the Hercules Trim amongst others to use as an audio interface.

But for either of the above you're gonna need VDJ Pro, and the latest version at that, to support the MixDeck as it is a new interface.

The Mixdeck does allow you to play MP3's and CD's. I know it does have the MIDI setup, so you may be correct that no timecodes are needed. I can't remember if I have the Pro version or not right now(not on my home computer at the moment) but if I don't, I will definitely upgrade to get the full experience.
 
Is there a way to upgrade to VDJ Pro from what I have now, or would I have to purchase the Pro Edition?
 
Depends on the version you have, if it is legitimate and has a serial you can try registering it here, if it has already been registered to someone else or is an illegal version then you will need to pay the full price for VDJ Pro.
