Topic: Ok so I'm new to virtual DJ

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Right then before i get going I've been DJ'ing for lots of years on vinyl and CD mixers but am interested in buying virtual dj and would love a bit of advice....please.

I've downloaded the free trial but I'm so used to being able to hear the next track as you would on a mixer and i need an idiots guide on how to do what I'm used to doing, i know i have to buy a sound card, but can i buy an external one? or do they all come as external units? sorry I'm a bit new to this!!

All i would like to do is plug my laptop into a club mixer and use virtual DJ to mix all my MP3's, any help moving forward on this would be really appreciated. I'm sure there are lots of you that will look at this as a bit daft, but i could do with a bit of help.

thanks guys.
Cris.

Hercules RMX is an easy option that many recommend, mixer/soundcard in one.

hi, Cris,

nothing daft about your question we have all needed advice at some point so don't worry about it.

as your just trying the system out you'll not want to splash to much cash on a sound card just now so just pop down to Argos and you'll pick one up at a half decent price, external sound cards can vary from the argos price right through to hundreds of pounds this is why I'm sending you this route first. once you got your card select a usb port you are going to use and always keep to that same port, goes for most things connected to digi djing., swapping ports is not good for the heart beats.

Now once you have your card plugged into the usb switch on your lappy, open up vdj and go to config (found at top right hand of screen) now select the sound tab, now select...

Inputs - None

Outputs - headphones (you will see one is for master and the other is for your headphones)

Soundcards - 2 ( select your external card as master and your on board card as head phones)

Connections...

From your external sound card run the red and white rca lead say to channel 3 on mixer, to run a head phone channel you will need to run a mini jack plug with red and white rca ends from laptop earphone socket to say channel 4 on your mixer, you will now be able to hear both channels through your mixer headphones, thats it your ready to roll, vdj automatically will select your headphone output once you place a tune on an empty deck.

or if you want go the full hog and get a rmx, both charlie and me and loads of other guys use them so they aren't all that bad, mid price range for a controller mid functionality comes with it and they have a built in sound card and set up is just about the same.

hope i explained that clearly enough for you, if not one of the other guys will jump in and help.

enjoy

GET AN RMX.. THEY ARE FANTASTIC!!!

i use rmx for my dvs setup, check out my profile for setup info and pics

For simple testing with the trial version you can split the audio out (mono separated) on your laptop so that one channel is the mixed output and the other is the headphones - not perfect but you are only trialling right...

Then simply connect these split channels to your mixer - you'll be using the crossfader in the software at this stage, but you will be able to cue from the headphones one one channel while outputting through the other.

VDJ is a great piece of kit, but to get the "true" DJ experience you need more than just the software. And if you choose the right route you can get an upgrade to pro cheap.

Quetions you need to ask yourself:

1. Do you want the vinyl/cd feel?
2. Would you be happy with emulating that feel with an "all in one controller"
3. What's your budget?

As they say - diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks... You need to have an idea of about the type of PC DJ you want to be:

* Old school DJ's like the feel of vinyl and therefore choose the timecode route - can be tricky to setup, but works best for scratch DJ's
* CD DJ's have two options. 1) Time code as above or 2) modern CD decks can be connected as MIDI devices to interact with VDJ directly and have their own soundcard to plug in to your mixer - You can then later look at a MIDI compatile mixer so you can get full control over VDJ, not just the "decks"
* Finally there's the MIDI controllers. There are many to choose from. Some of these have soundcards, some don't. The main thing here is that you have hardware that will have a famliar layout to 99.999% of DJ's and will take total control of VDJ - leaving the mouse and keyboard free for track searching and additional shortcuts.

I like many others, have the Hercules RMX, not only it is a soundcard in its own right but is also a MIDI controller with two decks and a crossfader that can completely control VDJ. It can also support timecodes via its external inputs so its a good way to get started and gives you room for growth/try out different configs.

You can get the RMX from DJKit here in the UK http://www.djkit.com/product.php?id=3885 and at the moment they are chucking in a free £15 iTunes card...

All Hercules products come with a limited edition version of VDJ which you can then upgrade to Pro at a significant discount.

Finally, there are a fair few of us from the UK on here and all willing to help new VDJ'ers with their transition...

Cheers,

Roy

theres a guide on here that i wrote on setting up your headphones,

enjoy

well i've just read half way through that quote then realised it was a quote from the original sender, next time it may be a lot beneficial to just put "@Cris" then your message, rather then requote all that text, pointless and a waste of time.

hmmm, i thought quotes come up in a seperate box??? must be another forum that does it....

why doesnt this one??

you got to have the pro version i'm afraid.

dude, thats just wrong....theres a little bit of nastyness going on there...

don't see your reasoning there though, people have gone the extra to pay for pro whether outright or purchase with a discount, same applies to downloads off the site, just another perk to consider on upgrading.
