I think the MOST important thing is to decide on what output resolution you wish to display. Then choose a projector with that native resolution so there is no upscaling/rescaling done to the image output. What you don't want is to have a video delay between your image and audio. You want this as minimal as possible. Choosing the right resolution for your projector minimises this delay as much as possible.

After that you want to make sure you definitely have a projector with a close proximity lense. Its not essential but it just means you don't need to have such a high lumen rating on the bulb because your not casting the image as far as you would with a projector without.

There are lots of options nowdays... remember your resolution is limited with vga and s-video. hdmi & dvi are the same, you can always use adaptors.
 
ok so resolution question.i use 1024X768 on my lappy does this mean i need a projector the same to show videos ect.
so many factors involved.
 
No, the resoution of your projector doesn't have to match that of your laptop.

"Extreme short throw" projectors are the way to go - you can get a huge image in very little space. I have a Hitachi ED-A100 that throws a 60" image from less than a foot behind the screen, and it'll fill much bigger screens from not much further back.

Check out the projector calculator at http://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm to compare the throw distance of various makes/models.
 
ok so how do i know when looking at projectors which is rear view.
ie some says ceiling/fronr/rear does this mean it can be viewed from rear screen.
nec mt1060 3 lcd projector anyone tell me if this is rear view and of good quality
 
They'll probably say in the specs if they can do rear projection. Most can. The only difference is that they mirror the image so it looks the right way round when viewed from the front of the screen. Obviously you also need a rear projection screen.

When it comes to getting a new projector, Get one with a High resolution. Times have changed now and its all about the picture quality. All the New videos are being recorded in HD and most of the older videos are being upconverted. They are using H.264 MP4. (Same As Blu-ray) The files are smaller (60 Thru 130 Mb) thats the average right now in that format. The detail quality is amazing..

I am using a Optoma Ew1610. The Brightness is 2700 and Contarst is 2000:1 Native is (1280 X 800) & (1920 x 1080) Max. Its 4,000 hours on Ecco Mode and 3,000 on bright. The ecco mode is very bright and no need for the brighter mode.
