What are the best practice suggestions for using mp3Gain?

My idea is to apply different Gain values by Genre using the Average Volume of a given genre as analyzed by mp3Gain.

My theory is:
- mp3Gain gives the SPL DB Volume value for each track which is how loud the track sounds. I am not sure if this is the same as human ear perceived volume, but lets assume that it is.
- The average volume value seems to vary depending on music genre. For instance, the average volume on Ballard tracks will probably be lower than on Rock or Reggaeton tracks.
- Given these differences, and in consideration of avoiding clipping, I think it is best practice to calculate the average volume by genre and apply that average to all tracks within the genre.
- Furthermore, in applying the average volume, avoid clipping by only applying volume values that approach the average without clipping.

This is a lot more work than just applying a value like 94db across the board, but I think it will result in a cleaner, minimally clipping library. Obviously the tracks in the genre with volumes higher than the average won't be a problem to bring down without much if any clipping, but the lower volume tracks may be only able to tolerate a couple of db boost without clipping.... and so may require boosting in groups. (a lot of work).

What do you all think of this theory? Smart ideas welcome.

In my opinion I think you're taking a far too technical approach to this. I find VDJ's auto-gain + remember is excellent and if there's the odd track that is a bit too loud or quiet then you can always adjust the gain on the mixer.

If I use auto gain + remember will this remember must gain adjustment, and next time I open VDJ6.1 it will play a that same gain level???
Do I have to load each song, then go to the loudest part, adjust gain and on to the next song?

It sets the loudest point to 0db and yes it remembers so the next time you load the same track
you will not get the low/high then high/low effect

My method with mp3Gain is;

from 1990 up to date is set at 94db because of modern recording techniques

before 1990 is set at 96db

Works for me :-)
