Brand often is a personal preference. I recommend getting as much disk size as possible, and a 7200 RPM speed. After that it is all taste.

One small tip:
Always buy your external HDD's in couples and clone (or sync) the one over the other as often as possible. You can never tell when an external HDD decides to die....

I agree with Phantom. I also rotate my drives so they get equal wear... But then that's just me.
My last purchase was 4 1.5Tb drives used as 2 pairs (Master/Clone). One pair for audio, the other for video/karaoke.
Cheers,
Roy

2 clubs, 5 different back up drives of 1 - 1.5 - 2tb, 3 different locations including a fire/temperature safe. brands? mostly Western Digital mybook drives. one other brand but cant remember it. and soon to be buying yet another one - videos take up a crapload of space dont they?
at the rate the prices are dropping for both traditional and solid state drives ( under $900usd for 250gb solid state drive and less than $70usd for 1tb. both on buy.com) having that extra piece of mind is worth it.
everything i've read on the SSDs is that they are much much faster, quieter and smaller. fairly soon you'll be able to buy them for what you were paying for a traditional spin drive a couple years ago, and they'll just get cheaper - smaller size = being able to carry more of them around = more music and variety.
i can foresee gig rigs being built with them very soon.
and the reason for all the extra back-ups? 2tb drive disappeared into thin air one night and a week later when backing up sports bar onto 2 drives - someone tripped on cords and knocked both to ground splitting case on one and tearing out USB and power cords. boss been paranoid ever since, so i get to make sure everything is backed up regularly in both clubs now.

What is the best way of doing this.
What I have done is plug in both drives to my system.
The original is drive "E". The second becomes drive "F".
So is I then need to change "F" back to "E".
Is there a better way?

Hmmm.... Not sure about that...
I have all my music on a server in my office. I simply copy the files using Easy File Sync 2.0 to one drive and then the other.
I have 6 sync jobs in total - 2 for music, 2 for karaoke and 2 for video which are paired as follows:
Server -> HDD (which excludes the database)
HDD -> Server (includes database and caters for any changes made to the tags while gigging)
I only ever have one HDD connected at time and I have Windows set the drive letter as they would be when connected to the gig machine.
Once I've sync'd the drive I fire up VDJ on the server, scan for new files on the HDD, and analyse them. Then run the HDD -> Server job again which backs up the database.
This way every time I go out, I know my database is 100% up to date.

Personally I use Total Commander in order to sync my files, drives, e.t.c.... Very powerful tool!

What do you mean it shrinks? How little does it get?
