We have just been thru a 7.2 Quake here in Christchurch (500 thousand people) in New Zealand,
the same size as the one that decimated the Dominican republic Recently.
With a estimated 2 Billion dollars in damages, the miracle is TWO SERIOUS INJURIES but NO DEATHS.
This was due to Better Buildings, lower population Density,And It struck at 4.30am Sat morn, Thank God.

nitebeatdisco, I am glad you are OK and there is no major injuries reported. I am from Haiti the part of the Island you have just mentioned. I loss my family and friends there. You are accurate about the better building constructions and lower population density.
Those are two major factors which made the January 12th 2010 earthquake In Haiti so devastating.
According to a few of my siblings who have been back to the Haitian capital recently still say Port-Au-Prince the Haitian capital still looks like a ghost town with no better future in sight.

Doesn't even appear to have made it on the news here in the UK...
Glad you are OK.

Yeah it did Roy, but as it wasn't a news item that was full of doom and gloom, so it just got a ten second mention.

It's not Jehova, Allah, Buddha or the Flying Spaghetti monster people should be thanking - it's the scientist and engineers who had the foresight and skills to prepare for such a disaster. Those are the people who are responsible for saving lives.

Its always been said that New Zealand was a ticking time bomb for earthquakes...
As stupid as it sounz, I think the earthquake will be a bit of a boost to the NZ economy with the construction of new buildings and roading.

No one. Brains are not given nor created. Maybe this article will explain this a bit better.
As for the rest, I'll share a quote from Derrick Jensen:
"Nature of physical reality is not determined by popular vote. Many people sharing the same delusion does not make the delusion true."
What this means that reality and how you perceive it are not necessarily the same thing. Just because you and even few billion others share the (mis)conception(?) that there's more to this world than us mere mortals, that doesn't mean it reflects reality in any way.

Didnt know you were down that way mate - hope all is well. Just lucky it was in the dead of night or I'm sure the body count would have been higher. These after shocks must be a bit frightening though - more than 250 in the past three days? Hang in there mate.
I hear what ur saying about the job prospects in the medium term (in the building industry anyway) but in the short term its horrific. I heard 86 people just lost their jobs from the supermarket in Kaiapoi which wont be reopening for another year. I imagine lots of retail workers will be without jobs after this also. 10% of people that have lost homes have no insurance. I suspect lots of people will be moving out of Canterbury.
My heart goes out to those suffering. But yeah we are on a faultline - one of the drawbacks to living in paradise ;)
