I am able to use Netsearch on 6.0.8 without having to sign up for anything. Now in 7 I need to pay $10/month? Does this mean I can leave 6.0.8 installed concurrent with 7 and continue to use it for free?

The Membership service was started with version 6.1. And with older versions prior to 6.1, you do not have access to the exclusive library as provided by the membership service. With the membership service the total structure of the service changed as well.
And, cache files from prior versions need to be re-authorized in version 7 to be used with version 7.
