Hey, Well at the momet im planning on getting my gear ive already been asked to dj at a few parties. Ofcourse they are underage parties, ages 15-20. Theres most certainly going to be alcohol involved and you know how some of those young kids can get. Im worried about taking a laptop to this party? Whats your opinion because the laptop is quite a big part of my set.

Place it high and protect the backside against the floor. And of course have an absoluty-no-drinks-near-the-gear policy.
I DJ in Denmark, and yes we drink a lot (the age limit is 16 for buying it in the supermarkets, and 18 in the bars BTW, so it's almost never under age drinking), but if the laptop is placed on the top, so the guests can't see me fully whilie being behind it, they normally talks to me and make request over the not-so-sensitive parts of the gear (like the light controls). And also if they have a drink in their hand while approaching, I simply remove it from their hand, and give it back to them, when they have made their requets (or statement). I haven't had any problems with it.
I assume you are talking about drinks - I've never had anyone, drunk or not, trying to do anything deliberately to destroy any of my gear.
Best regards
Klaus

Yeah, it should be okay if i have the laptop on the table next to my decks. Keeps it right away from any of the guests.
Just vandalism has been a main concern i shouldnt need to worry tho.
The no food or drink near my gear applys to pretty much any electronic thing i have.

Or you could be mean like me at the one bar where peeps sometimes try to hang their drinks over my lappy.
There is a variation of 'You can't afford this gear', 'This gear is worth more than you' 'You spill a drop of anything on my gear & you die' (that works really well) or 'I hope u are a good carpenter' because you spill on my gear & you are gonna need one!

Insurance Dude realy i wouldent even consider my gear going on the road without it
if you have been asked to DJ a couple of partys they this is your first step in the professional direction make the second and cover yourself and your guests yourself with damage insurance and your guests / clients with public liability they usualy have a policy that puts both together for less than the price of a new laptop making it a no brainer to insure all your gear for next to nothing

Insurance ... well here in New Zealand last time I inquired it was going to cost me around $7000 a year to insure $20,000 of gear!
At that time almost more than what I made .... Just not worth it ... period!
Some may say ... what if you get ripped off and lose all your gear .....well I have.... I personally still wouldn't get insurance ....
at those prices cheaper to be ripped off every few years!

If you bring a laptop to a party, just make sure you place it somewhere were no one can spill a drink on it or bump into it.

try putting a row of tables or chairs in front of your setup maybe 6 feet away and create a single walkway for requests/inquiries.
that way no one gets close enough to your gear to do any damage and i if you have your mates with you then that walkway will be safe too.
if you have a zero traffic zone your safe even if a fight breaks out because theres space between you and everything else. it also gives your mates time and space enough to get in a position of security. like right in front of you and throw any potential idiots back onto the dance floor.

And keep your laptop raised off the table. Either a proper laptop stand, or anything else sturdy to get it a couple off inches off the table. Anything so that if somebody spills a drink on the table, your laptop's safe!
Good luck with the party! :D

Not ONLY what he said but also to keep the laptop cool. My first christmas party gig with my laptop it froze during play with 45 minutes left to go of the party! It overheated and locked up due to not being able to breathe. I learned 2 things that night: 1) buy a cooling fan to sit the laptop on and 2) buy an ac adapter for the usb soundcard. "Why ac adapter for the soundcard??" You ask...so I can reboot the laptop while playing cds wigout the cd players volume being cut off. When using timecodes and a usb soundcard without an ac power adapter, when you reboot the computer it will "power off" your sound card because is receiving its power from the usb port.
