can someone give me a few tips on leveling my volume across tracks....a lot of the time im fine but tonight ive mixed an hours set and when listening back ive noticed some crazy jumps in the volume.
i try to switch it on the first beat of either a breakdown or on a bass beat. the timing seems to be ok but the volume is a bit mis matched so im getting a kind of double bubble on the mid and trebble. if the volume was a little lower on the second track it would have been fine.

Are you just crossfading? If so, you might want to get to grips with EQ mixing (under-mixing) so that you can control each of the EQ params to get a sweet mix.
Simply put, you cue up the incoming track, then drop all the EQ's to 0, raise the vol to max, then bring the incoming track in by increasing the individual EQ's levels. Using this method you can alter the effect of the transition between tracks each time you mix those two tracks - bringing in the Mid, with a bit of treble could allow you add the high hats or ride cymbals to the outgoing track, then build the treble up, whilst dropping the MID on the outgoing track, then swap over the bass EQ from the outgoing track to the incoming track, then finish off by dropping the outgoing track at an appropriate point in the incoming track.
I never use the crossfader, normally I will use a combination of deck EQ and VOL mixing (oh and it helps a bunch if you harmonic mix), and I always alter the gain, via cueing, so as to match the outgoing track as closely as possible.
Hope that helps (and sorry if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs).

thanks sai, i do already undermix to an extent but i use a combination of eq, fader and volume. i usually nudge the fader a quarter and the track 2 vol a quater and bring them both up gradually along with bass mid and trebel if ive zoned one or more of them out.
ive worked out what was wrong, the third track in the mix sounded a lot lower in volume than the second track so i upped the gain. as it happens it wasnt, i mixed the entire set again and everythings ok. i think the initial mix was screwed up by that gain adjustment. once id done it i forgot i had so things never matched quite as well as they should.
second time round its all good.
mind you ive got to allow a little space for mistakes at the moment as im mixing without headphones. just me my controler and my sound system. im having to use the waveform instead of my headphones to find the right beat.
the wave form is a great help at the moment as im not hugely farmiliar with all of my music yet. and to be fair, who would be with almost 700gig lol.
im doing ok though.

oh and im going to start adding more undermixing to my technique to unless you have any idea how to stop the track split recording creating 4 second and 7 second tracks when i touch the fader.
