@ DJStaffy...are the fans set to run all the time? Does the thermal light come on? Seems XTI's have overheating issues, which causes a thermo-switch to cut the amps. You should be able to set the fan status via the front panel.

Here's an excerpt from the Sound5 forum about running the diagnostics on startup.

...

When the amp has booted up you should be able to bring up the diagnostic screen by holding down all three buttons for a few seconds. Use the up and down buttons to navigate through the screens.
It should show you:
PSU temp
Channel 1 temp
Channel 2 temp
Firmware Version
HiQnet System Address
Fan setting (Hi/Lo or On)

The temperature at which the fan comes on when set to Lo changed in the last firmware update from 43oC to 33oC so if you are having problems with over heating I would strongly suggest you make sure you are running firmware version 1.1.5.6 and the Lo setting works fine for me. (The Hi setting is 53oC just incase you were wondering).

Apparently the factory setting is for the fans to run low to keep operating noise down.

Hope you get sorted.

mate dont use hqnet run just as normal amp thump this amp all the time bearly have sound high very low.

Is it just clipping or is the thermal light coming on?

Are you running a DI box before the amp?

What mixer are you using?

Strangely, the XTI fans are designed to work harder the harder you push the amp...well till they blow!

mate sraight to therm using graphic eq from pioneer djm5000
its defo the amp have 15 mins now ok highered up volume so hoping

I know you say that your running them as straight amps...not HiQnet...but you should still be able to alter the fan setting to "always on".

Here's the procedure from the Crown manual:

In XTi, CDi, and DSi amplifiers, the fan will turn on in “Fan Hi” mode when the internal heat sink temperature reaches 53C.

To change the fan mode, the “Next” button is held down at start up. A more sensitive “Fan Lo” will be initiated.
The fan will turn on at 33C and off at 23C. To disable it, hold down the “Next” button at start up and the fan will return to normal.

To change to “Fan On” mode, hold down the “Sel” button at start up and the fan will stay on high continuously. To disable it, hold down the “Sel” at start up and the fan will return to normal.

Your not using "Sound Maximiser" are you? I know when I use "Ultramise" (Behringer equivalent), the amps really don't like it.

no sound max mate seems ok at the mo ill read this again and do the fan adjust really appriciate this simon thank you very much

How did you get on bud?...

mate cut again a few timrs got this amp so i didnt have to worry about this stuff.
will making a file re hqnet help.
use basic two set ups one with just speakers 700 watt and then same speakers with 400 watt bins will making two files help me as never tried it

anyone else with help please do as posted before noe technical on the amp sound side of this

Hi mate

first I am assuming that you have checked all your speaker leads and your speakers are in good order. XTI amps will run down to 2Ohm Speaker loads ie 2 4Ohm speakers in parallel but do need good quality heavy gauge and short speaker cables to do it. I would not run them at 2 Ohms unless you realy need to as this puts a heavy power demand on the amp and can cause it to run hot.

If the level indicators are reading max/clip and you do not apear to be getting the correct output. First make shure that you have not put the amp into BRIDGE MODE. On the XTI this is indicated at the top edge of the display with a small bridge icon. If it is then go through the setup menu and select to STEREO. If the amp is in BRIDGE MODE and not correctly connected for this mode it will not work properly and could be giving you the low output.

Mains power can also cause the XTI amps to trip/limit and cut out on thermal. Be shure that the power cable is heavy gauge and the power supply socket is in good order. Avoid using long extension cable runs.

I know you dont use the HiQ net but would strongly suggest thet you go to the Harmon Audio/Crown website and download the Bandmanager software. Once downloaded plug the amp into your laptop . The software will automaticaly detect your amp and if you are connected to the internet will automaticaly update the amps firmware to the latest available version. Setting up and saving the DSP Presets is much easyer using the software than messing with the front panel keys.

It is of course possible that your amp has developed a fault. If you suspect this get it returned to an authorised dealer who can get it repaired under thair No Fault warranty.

Good Luck

Ok all looks good.

Your speakers are 8Ohm so will produce the minimum output from the amp (Which model XTI do you have?). The amp will have no problems running these and a pair of 8Ohm bins. Passive 8Ohm bins with built in crossovers are becoming a rare find these days(Many are 4Ohm). I would try to find 8Ohm units as these will maintain the sound balance between the bins and tops.

Be shure the speakers do not have any faults, check that all the drivers Bass unit( Run the speaker and check for any scuffing sound or fuzziness from the bass unit. This can indicate a misaligned cone or warped coil. The speaker will work but cause partial short circuits in the speakers voice coil) and Horn are working (A short circuit in a horn driver can cause the amp to cut out at higher power settings).

If you have not made any changes, speaker leads are good, speakers working correctly and the amp is set for STEREO and not BRIDGED output your only remaining possibility as that the amp has developed a fault :-(

Good job you get that warranty with Crown.

only thing is daz i bought it from us so would cost me to send it back and then be without it for weeks ect.
tried downloading band m and system a and neither will open on my pc having a bad day.
my firmware is 1.1.5.6 is this the most utd version.
as i said spent my money on this amp for peace of mid pissed off now,
my amp is set bto stero and fan to lo anything else i can do mate

Hi mate

Which XTI amp do you have? The firmware versions may be different for each model.

There should be a dealer for Crown in your country. As far as I am aware the warranty is universal so you don't need to ship it all the way back to the States. Check on the website and see where your nearest service center is. I will have a play with one of my XTI's and see if there are any other settings that can cause this. I doubt it. If the amp is cutting out then something is wrong.

I frequently run mine at outdoor events in Saudi Arabia with ambient temps up to 44 deg C and have no heat issues. If the amp is cutting out on the thermal trip this would only be caused by running hard into low impeadance loads IE 2Ohm or driving a short circuit speaker or cable. As this would not seem to be your issue the only other thought would be to check that the fan IS actualy working. If it is then get on to Crown.

mate it is an xti 4000.
then fan works when i do what simon said and hold sel button down on start up...
think i will try run amp straight ti pioneer djm5000 mixer instead of going through graphic equilizer...
i willcheck crown site to see nearest dealer but been on crown forums and site nothing like this cant get reply even emailing staff

Will get one of my 4000s plugged into the laptop and check the firmware version.

I noticed that Crown did a recall on some amps. Again its on the website and they have a quick check that can be done by typing in your amps serial number to see if your amp is affected.

BTW only running one pair of 8Ohm speakers will not give you the most out of the amp you will be getting 650W per chan at the moment. With an extra pair of 8 Ohm speakers it will give you 1200W per chan with no problems. Assuming your issue gets fixed of course.

Good luck

Well guess what.
I had a similar issue with one of my XTI2000's on Thursday. I was getting the thermal/clip lights coming on well before full output from the amp. It was running the mid and top speakers in one of the stacks. It didn't trip but the level indicator was showing -20 and the clip lights were flashing. Traced it down to the mains power cable. The cable supplying one side of the stage had a slightly high resistance connection at the outlet I was using. Changed to a different outlet and bingo! the problem went away. When I checked after the gig was over I found that the connection in the outlet was dropping nearly 50 Volts (220V outlet) with the amp wound up but red virtualy no drop under No Load. The resistance across the contact was only a couple of ohms but at the high currents the amp was pulling it made for one hell of a drop in the supply voltage!

daz mate think it was similar for me cause since then i updated firmware set up a file and has been the usual solid since.if anyone needs firmware drop me a message with email
