How do I get the software to play all types of converted music files? I'm getting an m4 error display whenever I try to play any songs from my Ipod library..

It's called DRM copy protection.
As far as I know, VDJ cannot play copy protected files, even if you purchased them on the same computer that runs VDJ.
Your purchase license usually permits you to burn the tracks to CD, so you could do that and them rip them to MP3 from the CD.

Hmm, that is strange, this may be my issue I am having but I am using a file that was not purchased that I got directly from the artist. Is there a way to remove the protection first of all? I have the same file on my Mac and have no issues whatsoever.

If the file is Apple DRM protected (.m4p) then it will not work on PC or a Mac. These files can only be played on Apple authorised software/devices such as iTunes, iPod, iPhone, etc.
What type of file is it? And which decoder do you have selected for that type of file in CONFIG -> Codecs ?
What version of VirtualDJ are you using? If you are using v5.x or earlier, then due to it being an older version, the built-in decoder does not have native support for the latest MP4 codecs, and this may be why you cannot load the file.
