You may be referring to controllers that have built-in hardware audio mixers.
Most controllers are software MIDI controllers only and even though they may look like a traditional mixer, they will not function without a computer and appropriate software (E.g: VirtualDJ) running. If your computer crashes, then you lose all functionality of the controller until you can restart it and get your DJ software up and running again. You cannot switch to and use a backup source.
MIDI controllers with a hardware mixer are different. The real hardware mixer means that you can seamlessly switch to an alternative source (E.g: Backup iPod) and keep the music going in an emergency.
Controllers with real hardware mixers include the Denon DN-MC6000 and American Audio VMS4.
Hercules DJ Console 4-Mx is a software MIDI controller only.

how about the Numark NS6 is that a controller with which we could use backup source if our laptop crashes during a gig?
in 4mx description its written
2 stereo out (for mixing & previewing) + 2 stereo in (for analog gear)

That is a description of the sound card built into the 4-Mx. The 4-Mx does allow external sources to be input, but these go through the software mixer in VirtualDJ and will cease to work if your computer crashes.
On Numark's website http://www.numark.com/ns6 the NS6 is described as a standalone 4-channel mixer with effects, so it does appear to be hardware mixer that would continue to function if your computer crashed. However, the NS6 is a new controller that is not available for sale yet and is also not natively supported by VirtualDJ yet.

VMS4 is low priced - but the reason becomes clear when you discover the low output level, distortion on the mic inputs, off centre jog wheels, lack of mixer headroom due to only a 5v supply, and various other issues that users have found.....
If you want quality, you have to pay for it!

And i found quality in the DN-MC6000, it's a midi controller and stand alone mixer.
The plus points over the NS6 is the ability to have 4 inputs into the mixer (or 4 midi channels or 2 of each etc etc) and 2 mics. From what I can gather with the NS6, is + mic = - input.
