I have been reading about these forums for days.
There appears to be a memory leak with this software and ATI video cards.
I just purchased a new ASUS laptop with a radeon 6370 in it, 4 gigs of ram and a quad core I7.
It should be more than capable of running this software, but the ram gets used up quite quickly, while playing video.
I have tried every bandaid fix in these forums...is there any hope for getting this fixed?
I am using the demo version and like it...but I cannot purchase it until it works properly....

Been using video with VDJ now for about 2 years with ATI graphics cards and have not had any problems at all.

I use an ATI videocard every gig 5-6 hours straight with never any problems.

What drivers and program version are you using?
Inviato Thu 19 May 11 @ 2:34 am
Been using video with VDJ 6 to 7.0.4, with both windows 7 32bit 3 gig ram and windows 64bit 5 gig ram.

please tell us..... what's a memory leak?
how are you measuring the ram usage?
turn off the Aero
instead of rattling off the list again i'm just gonna say get gamebooster and use it ......
also your new unit needs a defrag bad

A memory leak is a program that uses WAY more ram than it should. The memory usage creeps up until the program uses all available memory, and starts to lock up the machine, videos become choppy, system unresponsive.
Measuring using task manager, and a widget.
Turning off Aero makes absolutely no difference
gamebooster will not help this machine.......its blazing fast......Its an I7, The specs are way above what the program calls for.

It's a demo version, and you are limited in the things you can do. Check the comparision chart here

If you've been scouring the forums you'll have seen all the posts, including mine.
It's something to do with the way the Catalyst software talks to VDJ. I tried rolling back drivers and uninstalling this and that. In fact, most folks have tried that who have this horrible issue.
Long and short of my issue is...i changed to nvidia. Problem solved.
Sorry...i know you've just bought a laptop. And a great laptop at that...but this is the reason i spin with a desktop...you can make your own changes. I purposely built a machine for Windows 7, VDJ and Firetext and initially checked in with a 1gb ATI card. The machine had 4 gigs memory and a 3gig quad core cpu and i got seriously hit with a memory leak. I'm sure with audio it's ok...if OK's the correct phrase. Perhaps 'acceptable' is better, but after loading 2 vids i was using something like 80% of memory...something's not quite right. Like you, i scoured the forums and the web, only to find out that ATI have been suffering memory leaks for years. Uninstalling catalyst did not help me at all. Don't get me wrong, i'm sure i've used VDJ with ATI previously and not had any issues but i will never go back to ATI now purely because of this. I'm not dissing ATI or VDJ but can't believe there's that much of an issue...it's shocking!
I'm not sure the version of VDJ has anything to do with this issue though?
Sorry to break that to you.

Thanks for the responses,
I guess I will just keep trying new releases until its fixed....
I find it very odd that one of the best softwares' out there has been plagued by a bug like this for so long.
Every other piece of software I have tried has run flawlessly, but does not have the options that virtual DJ has.
I can live with something else for now.
but PLEASE fix this :(

a memory leak occurs when threads still run even when they're not supposed to
therefore using system resources , for no reason at that point
no matter how nice your computer is outta the box it can always benefit from
reg hacks , tweaks , driver and DirectX updates , etc
when i did a side by side comparison with gamebooster , it found one service to turn off that i
didn't so it's very useful .....you should avail yourself
4 gigs of ram in w7 is standard issue .....although i wouldn't call it weak , i wouldn't call it
powerful either
i only do video w/ 6 or 8 gigs of ram on a well prepared system , usually a desktop

I hope there is hope :-)
as what? 1/3 of the laptops being sold today come with either amd or ati video cards..
I wonder when this started happening and if its related to windows 7 64 bit or just the new drivers ATI came out with?
I have ATI cards in all my computers.. 3 desktops and two laptops.. none have shown this problem until I purchased my new netbook with an AMD built in video and windows 7 64 bit.. :-(
so its not happening to ALL ati cards.. just the newer ones?

Ok I have an Asus G73J laptop that I bought 2 years ago suffering from the ATI leak, my card is an ATI HD Radeon 5870 1GB DDR5, My solution were in 2 steps:
1- I had been updating the Catalyst and Video drivers in order to play new PC games such as Arkham Asylum.
I went back to the original Catalyst and video driver that are on the asus website when it was first released
2- you have to have an original version of VDJ and be registered in order to download the Registry Tool and tweak the registry settings.
If you are, start by putting 128 on the videomemmaxuse on the video section of the registry tool, then work your self up to 232 and
finally i stopped at 512 before the video would either get stuck or choppy again.
this worked for me after 4 months of research and coming up with my own solution from different threads.
yesterday i helped my friend with his new laptop with the same issue. he has an ATI HD Radeon 6840, 1GB DDR3, I tweaked the videomemmaxuse to 128, and it worked fine, any increase in that would result in videos getting stuck or choppy.
basically every ATI card works differently you just need to play with the tweak settings in order to get it to work with all Video types (avi,vob,mp4,wmv,mkv etc...)
P.S. DO NOT CHECK THE VIDEOUSEALLMEMORY CHECK BOX

"No Licence User" should be running the "VirtualDJ Home FREE" version of the software.
With the home version, you dont have access to full screen video out, so you shouldnt have a problem with Windows Aero, and im my experience, the video card dosent have issues with running video "In A Window"
If you HAVE purchased the FULL PRO version, then you should register you serial in your profile on this forum.
Registering the serial will unlock access to downloading the tools including the registry too.
as for ATI cards, i have a HD55xx series and Virtual DJ will not (in my experience) work full screen video out with catalyst drivers newer than 10.2
(This means i cant make use of 3D in games, thanks) and full screen video out is still incompatible on my card with Aero :(
BTW: Turning off Windows Aero will fix an incompatability with the way VirtualDj draws the skin on the screen (not video Performance issues) In sime instances, if you open and close other apps over the top of VDJ, you may see an unmovable 'copy' of that window.
Turning off the Aero system will avoid this bug.

Great, I just purchased my new i7 laptop with ATI 6770M with 2GB GDDR5, I will keep my fingers crossed until it gets here and I can test it out. I had been using Nvidia's prior to this but I wanted more memory on my card so I couldn't resist the upgrade LOL
