Hey guys, so I have my first wedding booked and coming up. I just met with the groom and he informed me he doesn't want to hear any rap, and doesn't prefer dance music. I asked him what he would like to hear and he said classic rock and country. Sooo I was wondering if any wedding DJ's out there could recommend some songs for me. I play mostly at nightclubs so most of my music is dance/hip hop lol. This wedding is DEEP in the country.

If I were you, my first song would be "Shake Dat Ass by 50 Cent", to get the crowd moving. Actually, look here for the top 1000 classic rock songs. Good Luck.

After thinking a little more, you are going to need some more help, because you don't know what you are looking at. It was a little easy for me to point you in this direction, because I have all of this stuff. It will be a little harder for you, since this is not normal for you. Copy this list in a way that it looks like it came from you. Put it on your letterhead, so it does not look like you are a novice. Sent it to them and ask him to pick out 100 of his favorites. That's about how many you can play in a 5 hour gig. Then you will have to get that music, and a little more. Or, you can come clean, and tell him this is above your pay grade, and ask him for help. He may have all of this music.

I know you guys are trying to help, but he said Classic Rock and Country. I looked at his profile, and he is from Missouri. He said it was DEEP in the country. Now I'm not from Missouri, but when they say Classic Rock, I don't think they mean Funkytown, or the Black Eyed Peas. I could be wrong, but I think they are looking more to Boston, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, John Cougar Mellencamp. Again, I would ask him, why guess.

Doesn't get anymore classic rock than the 80's! Late 70's are fair but 80's rock on and always will. The links I gave him provide top country, classic rock, pop, etc from almost all era's.

OK, I see other links on that page, but when you go to that link, it list 100 top dance hits of the 80s, and started playing Funkytown, and Heartbeat by Tanya Garner.

I always ask for a list of about at least 15-20 songs or more if they are willing to give that they want 2 hear, that way it puts me in the frame of mind of the music that the customer wants 2 hear.....You know if he names a garth brooks song then u know it is cool to play a little brooks & dunn or if they say Metallica u know u can play some AC/DC.....I just use the list as a genre tool.....So maybe you can try it.

If you haven't already done so, I would come clean with the client that this is your first wedding. Explain that most of the music in your library is of the rap/dance type. Then I would get ready to spend some money to expand your library. All of the links provided thus far are full of good quality lists.

If it was me, I would have made sure I had a comprehensive library BEFORE booking a wedding. If it happened that I was at a club and they came up to the DJ booth and asked me, I would have explained that I was a club DJ not a wedding DJ and they should keep that in mind before making that decision. Weddings are quite a bit different than a club. Do a good job here and it could lead to future gigs. Screw up, and you have just ruined one of the biggest days in the couple's life.

Make sure to post an update after the event.

Having been a club DJ in the past, and now doing mostly private events, I can assure you of one immutable fact. When the customer say don't play a given genre, DON"T PLAY IT! There is a place on my event forms that asks "Is there any type of music, or specific songs, you would like us to avoid?"

AMaHM is correct in pointing out, don't even dabble with Y.M.C.A. without first talking to either the bride or groom. I recently did one wedding, the groom listed Cha Cha Slide on the do not play list. The bride came up, two hours into it, and asked me to play it. The groom went BALLISTIC!!!! The bride, to her credit, ran over and told him she had requested the song, which seemed to placate him, but just barely.

The other suggestion I read in this thread which has merit, make sure you come clean and inform the couple, sooner rather than later, this is your first wedding DJing. You will get a lot of requests for current pop songs, which can be considered dance or rap by some, be polite, be firm, and inform them what you were instructed to play by the happy couple. And don't be surprised if after 2 hours of drinking the bride, and or groom, tell you to play whatever, just keep the crowd happy.

If they want country, I would have Boot Scootin' Boogie and Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy. There are a lot of country line dances, I would carry at least 6 of those with me, if not more.

i'd stick with classic rock from 60's 70's and a little 80's

it should be so classic even they've heard of it ..........

Glad I dont DJ weddings anymore. It was always fun where someone would tell me not to play something then someone from thier family would be like "I'm the one actually paying for all this ..I want you play this or that." and the bride / groom would get bent out of shape.
Get a playlist in order and contract with the couple before doing all this.

thanks,
David

THanks for the great tips and all the links guys!! I've been gathering suggested music for the last two days and I am feeling confident now that I have plenty of music to their liking. I told them from the beginning this was my first wedding. They are simple people really. Its a small wedding so I'm thinking it will go rather smoothly. Its a dry wedding at that lol =/... They also know I am a club DJ but I think they really just want to cut costs. I'm doing it for a very reasonable price. Actually some of the music he requested is Garth Brooks and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Haha this should be interesting. I'll be sure and let you all know how it goes and try to post some pictures! THanks again brochachos!

Throw in some Colt Ford and Big Smo for kicks and you have yourself a party.

If I were you look at Graomi's list and any of those songs you know work them in. Next, just appease "Mr. only rock and country" with some here and there. Otherwise work the ladies. If this party is rockin' you did your job.

Agreed, don't play Rap, end of story there. Which most of your clients will not want to hear. Just inform them that almost no dance gets off the ground with only Rock & Country. Most people like those genres because they are more politically accepatble by a wide range of people to listen to every day. You need to get them to allow some creative freedom & music in there that is not so bland so that people want to dance. Playing to the ladies is how you do that. They are ALWAYS the first on the floor, I don't personally know any guys that dance because they love it.

A little advice, I just did an event like that last week. I started the night out (during the social and sitting parts) with the bland rock & country (you are not trying to get them going yet). Then, during the dance sections, I only played MEGA high energy, extremly well known songs (stuff your parents know) like "Bryan Adams - Summer of 69", etc. I played only a couple line dances and sprikled in mostly slow rock or country songs among the top 40.

Just gently explain to them that they are spending all this money for thier guests to have a good time too. They wll need to include a bit of top 40 and Group Dance songs (electric slide, cotton eyed Joe) to get people out of thier seats. I have reffered to Top 40 and Group Dance songs as "DJ tools that almost every event needs". If they still say no, then it is what it is, do it thier way. If the floor is empty that day, find them and send your point home again. I have even showed them the written request sheet. They will always say do what you need to, to get the party started because your point is now proven. When you call it ahead of time, you look like the pro too. Just don't get too creative with a crowd like that. Play well known mega hits like "Lady Gaga - Poker face" and the like.

Another tip, I find songs that are "must plays" and then put them in Pandora radio to see other songs that go well with it. I have built TONS of pick lists this way. Then name them by the content like Top 40, Current hits, Group Dance, Rock, Country, etc.
