Topic: Could laptop pwr supply cause audio pops and clicks? - Page: 1

Questa parte dell'argomento è obsoleta e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate

I bought a Sony Vaio i5 750 gig hard drive, Windows 7-64 bit, 4 gigs of ram about 6 weeks ago and have been experiencing some pops and clicks in my audio. I've looked all over the forums and did the suggestions for VDJ 7.0.4 and laptop the posts recommended (i.e. http://www.virtualdj.com/homepage/jpboggis/blogs/4094/Common_performance_issues_and_solutions.html)

and still can't get rid of the noises. The CPU meter in VDJ rarely pegs into the yellow or red

Until I unplugged the laptop from the computer and ran it on the battery is when I noticed a difference.

So my question...Is it possible the laptop power supply could be the culprit....and is it correctable because of course I need my pwr cord.

I've searched around and saw everything from adjusting the latency to checking the laptop powersave--nothing is running the background and settings and when i ran it on the battery and no power supply the pops and clicks seem to not be as often and as loud.

Thanks,

g

yes, indeed it could be the problem. try to fine a dual shielded power suply or an ungrounded one. i had simeilar problems and ended up having to buy an ungrounded PSU for my laptop.

if everything is fine untill you plug the power cord in then it is definitly the culprit.

hope this helps, john.

You have to tweak the Laptop.

No - he's saying that the sounds are still there when running on battery...

99% of the time a laptop PSU will be the cause of hum through your audio system rather than pops and clicks.

Fotobro, you don't say what sound card you're using when this happens.

The usual suspect for audio pops and clicks is trying to use too low a latency setting.

I have heard that moving the PC as far as possible away from the power pack that plugs into the wall can help...Im not sure though if your issue is electromagnetic interference (moving the pack would help), or if the problem is latency........

Sorry mates I did forget to list my sound card.

I'm using the American Audio VMS4..as far as the powerpack it is actually on the ground away from the laptop.

As far as the latency questions, i have tried all of the latency settings including trying safe mode checked and unchecked

I've even separated the cables and pwr cords.

I've been running another vaio since 2008 and once I got the latency settings down it's worked like a champ and not had any issues--though I'm running VDJ 7.0.2 one upgrade behind what I'm running on the new laptop...I wonder if 7.0.4 has anything to do with it i might eventually uninstall and reinstall 7.0.2 to see if it helps

Anymore suggestions besides what's listed in the forums..I think I've just about done everything I've run across on here to tweak my lappy.

It's pretty much stripped down and unistalled pre installed junk from the company, no antivirus, don't use it to surf on the net, no power mangement-full power for battery and AC, Went in msconfig and eliminated programs running in the back ground, OS updates turned off, no wi-fi running, etc.

Hi mate

Can you clarify as to wether the noise stops when you run the laptop only on battery power?

There seems to be some confusion.

Ok, so VMS4......

Are you powering the VMS4 or just using USB to run it?

Are you getting the problem JUST with the VMS4 (i.e. try another sound output)?

Are you using the proper ADJ ASIO drivers, and not ASIO4ALL etc?

The noise when just using the battery and no power supply is not completely gone, but I'd say 90 percent and the 10 percent is not that noticeable.

The VMS4 is powered via supplied adapter that came with it

I am using the ADJ ASIO 1.07 driver which is the current driver and went to the ADJ website and downloaded the driver and re-installed it just to make sure..

I was getting the noises using the Hercules RMX too, but not as bad--same thing the noises seem to diminish after I unplug the power cable and run it on the laptop battery.

No pops clicks running VDJ minus the VMS4 also the laptop adapter was plugged in music was clean. It sounds like the VMS4 does not like my laptop power supply for some reason.

Hope this clarifies the problem more,

thanks,

have you checked for driver updates for your bus conrollers? there could be a problem with the usb port drivers.

I thought about that last night when i was messing around in the device manager. Once I get my laptop working great I turn off the sony and windows updates...I may turn them back on and update the laptop. I can't believe I'm having this much trouble solviing this issue and of course the laptop is beyond exchanging.

I'll post an update after I do driver updates.--g

theres a good chance you are missing a few updates then lol. i updated my toshiba a few days ago for the first time in about a year and it took forever. a good 5-6 hours to install all the updates id missed.

try removing the battery

i'm not convinced you need driver updates

set a restore point before you do that ......

if you did the power supply tweaks properly ....

your power profile is always on .....and beneath that all choices are set to never ......

is that how you are configured ??

whatever your problem is , it is affecting all external soundcards ......

since you have problems with or without battery , your power settings may need changing

try removing the battery

also try turning off the windows firewall

click ctrl-shift-esc ......how many processes ??

Have you tried using a different USB cable to connect the controller?

you could also try disabling USB seletcive suspend

power options > advanced power settings > USB settings > Usb Selective suspend setting

set to disable on plug

it could be messing with your usb ports.

just another idea...

Another possible issue is weak grounding somewhere in the construction of the laptop internals. Only way to fix that would be to exchange the laptop and hope the replacement is better constructed. That is a long shot but if all else fails to solve the problem a manufacturing defect is always possible.

It may could be a "noisy" power supply or like on my Dell system it sends identification info. If it can't tell what charger you have it may cause excessive CPU throttling. On my old system after a month or 2 it would stop liking my smaller 60watt supply. I could do a system restore or restore from ghost and it would work. I suspected some Windows update was causing the issue. My freind's battery, when it started to die was causing excessive DPC's

thanks,
David

Status UPDATE:

After 2 months of dealing with the pops, clicks and stutters (sounds like dropouts) here is what I have figured out so far:

Sony has sent me another 19.5 v pwr adapter, it's physically bigger and more amps. The interference seems not to be as bad, though still there.

Both pwr adapters are causing a noticeable hum over my phone that can be on my end and the callers end whenever I touch the cord or the adapter tip.

The music interference only occurs when running VDJ 7 Pro edition with the pwr adapter connected, not with iTunes, quick time etc. There is something about the pwr adapter and VDJ7 that just ain't getting along together.

Now get this: I thought I would record the song with VDJ to have proof of the pops and clicks. Recorded 90 seconds of the song with the pwr adapter and heard the pops and clicks and recorded another 90 secs without the adapter and had a clean recording, but when I played them both, they both were clean.....

Lucky for me the Tier 2 manager who was helping me was a DJ and familiar with Virtual DJ and other spinning programs was very sympathetic and set me up with a call in a couple days with the office that will make a decision hopefully to replace or refund which I hope refund.

The laptop works fine in every other instance except when Running VDJ with the power adapter connected.
