I have a very new i7 SONY VAIO laptop with VGA as the 2nd output. I hooked up a cable that converts VGA to SVideo, but I cannot get the laptop to detect the SVideo connection to the TV. I have all the standard settings correct... extended display, activated TV output, NVidea output selected in VDJ.
Do I need some sort of converter box, rather than just a VGA to SVideo adapter?

It depends on what type of adapter u have, the simple cable adapter that just has the plugs on the ends didn't work for me I had to get an adapter that is powered ie usb or 5v external starting at about $20.00 on ebay.

I use 1 of these, http://cgi.ebay.com/PC-Laptop-VGA-PC-TV-VGA-RCA-S-video-BNC-AV-Converter-/170617101791?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b9925ddf
Never had a problem with it.
Hope it helps

What you need to do is plug in the adapter first, your screen will blink, then activate VDJ. Then got to video settings under the video tab in VDJ. Click on window activate then select the video adapter. With the VAIO you don't have to go into the dual screen video settings to output the video from VDJ.

This may be a dumb question but I have seen a few of these VGA-> s-video threads lately - Why can't you just use the HDMI output? if you are going into a tv I am assuming tv since most projectors have VGA inputs. Thanks for enlightening me as I also have a Sony vaio but have not yet done any external video.

You can as long as the playback device has an HDMI input. It makes life simpler. Believe it or not most clubs here in Japan are still stuck with "S" video.

Wow - welcome to the 90's

@Eric, not all VGA outs will give you a s-video signal through those cable converters, best thing to do is get a powered converter as beatbreaker give the link to, similar one in the UK costs around the $60 (40 quid) mark from Maplins and that was with a £10 discount, so they are as cheap as chips over your side of the pond.

A lot of places here in the UK are using composite still, you're not alone.

Same here, most of the clubs are still using composite. Last place I did had a 25' run of s-video, lol!

What is the resolution for the 2nd display (out)? Try 800x600 or 720x480 for s-video.

Thanks all... sorry I forgot to activate the BELL and I did not know I had responses to this issue.
To answer your questions:
Yes - I figured I needed some sort of powered option or scan converter. I bought a K-World model at Frys for $40...works OK.
I am at 800x600 resolution. The reason I am not using HDMI or even VGA direct is because I am feeding this signal to an Edirol V4 video mixer (SD - not HD) with other SVideo sources.

so what if I use this converter? http://www.meritline.com/hdmi-composite-s-video-converter---p-58899.aspx instead of using a vga to composite converter?

That should work if you have an hdmi output on your laptop
