What model of hard drive?
Seeing as how the Denon have their own power supply they should not be pulling much power from the hub. A wireless mouse should not pull too much either. Most likely culprit is the Hard drive. The USB spec only allows for 500ma to be drawn from any given port and 4 port hub -each controller can only have 4 ports - is limited to 2amps @5v or 10w total.
Check the DC power adapter and see what it says the rated output is.
Using a self powered External HD is probably the best answer.

I'm not sure y I keep getting drop outs. The hard drive has its on power. My laptop has 3 usb 3 ports and I use one for
the hub. I see and hear window 7 dropping the hub maybe 2 times a hour. The hub is a d-link 7 port.

A seven port hub is actually 2 four port hubs with the second hub internally connected to the first so 3 from the first hub and 4 ports from the 2nd hub are available. the signal strength and carrying capacity of the 4 secondary ports will be less than the 3 available primary ports. It sounds more like a firmware or hardware issue with the internal USB controller on your laptop. USB 3.0 is not natively supported on motherboards so internally there must be an add on controller. It is possible that the connection is not grounded as well as it should be i.e. a manufacturing defect with your laptop.
Do you have anything else connected?
What happens if you just use the 3 ports on the laptop to connect denons and the hard drive? Does any one of the devices drop - indicating a bad port -or do they all work fine?
I have never used these type of CDJ's but they have d-link cable option to relay commands from a 2nd CDJ to the first. What happens if you link the 2 CDJ's and only plug one into a USB port on the laptop, the HD into another, and the mouse into the 3rd?
see page 9 and 27 of your manual

I have a similar set up:
2 Denon DN S3700
Seagate 1TB
Denon DNX1700
all going into a D Link 4port
I have never had a problem with drop outs. Now granted I only use my HD when I am at home and the few mobile gigs that I do. I don't need it when I am at the club. Hate to make this about Mac VS PC, but I have a Mac and never have a problem when I do use an external HD. I would suggest checking settings on your PC. Maybe it is shutting off a port when idle?

I will try this today. Would it be better to just get a 4 port hub...?

Or just plug the HD directly to your PC and use the Hub for you Denons and mouse only

Not if the problem is internal to the Laptop or is software based - make sure your power options keep all USB ports from hibernating. Check the AC adapter of your current hub and make sure the output is at least 2amps If it is less than that there are higher powered hubs available.

ok my question to you would be are you using your s3700's as soundcards? I personally dont use the soundcards on my s3700's because if would need to switch to lets say the cd players on my s3700's there would be a a pause in music when you go from md to cd so use to use my hercules rmx as the soundcard and then that brought another problem... everytime at a gig i woul lose my sound and not get it back that would happen to me at least once a night so then i would have 2 restart vdj... so for the life of me i could not figure out why was this happening until one day at the forum someone told me that if i was pluging my rmx into a hub i said yes and they said never plug your souncard into a hub always directly into your laptop and so i did that and never had that problem again. so now i run 2 s3700's and a mc6000 and use the mc6000 as my soundcard plug that directly in one of my usb ports and plug my external harddirve in another port on my lappy and have a powered usb hub that has my 2 denon s3700's connected and it has worked perfect for a long time now.... Now my computer has 3 usb ports i know some comptuters only have 2 like a lot of mac's d o so then you would have to plug in your external hd along with your s3700's in the same hub that should aslo work.
hope this helps....

go to djtechtools.com there is an article listing different powered hubs that will work. I purchased a hub with a high powered port and have no problems.

All hubs are not created equally. Some 4 port hubs only allow 2 of them to be high speed, which you would use for your hard drives. I found this out the hard way.

what hubs do you all have..?

@audio000 try this hotfix if your using W7 and having problems with your usb ports it worked for my W7 machine and running a d-link 4 port powerd hub.

I use the Belkin 7 port USB hub sold at Guitar Center and I run 2 CDJ-400s, a MIDI to USB (MIDI Sport Uno) for my DJM-800 and 4 external hard drives. Never once have I "dropped power". EVER... I'm not sure what you have going on but all I can say is maybe it's more of an issue with your computer, RAM and other factors...

I bought mine from Staples years ago, and it looks exactly like this, except mine is a 4 port high speed. I guess they no longer carry the model I have.
