Club of the Future - The DJ is becoming extinct
You purchased your ticket online or at the clubs ticket dispensing machine. You show up and stand online for your usual pat down with the big beefy bouncer (something’s never change). Once past the security you hand your ticket to the ticket scanner and enter the club. The lights are flashing and music is pumping, girls and guys dancing as usual. You make your way over to the bar. There is no bartender only a vending machine similar to the soda machine at work or found in any mall. You approach the touch screen and press the menu to select your drink, now swipe your credit card for your favorite alcoholic beverage, down comes the cup, then the crushed ice and finally Grey Goose and OJ.
You finally have some courage in your cup and now feel more confident so off you go looking for that hot chic you saw earlier. You ask her to dance and head off to the dance floor, song after song you guys are having the time of your life. As you stroll around the club looking for the DJ you can’t find a DJ booth, since its Saturday night it’s being streamed over the internet from a DJ hundreds of miles away. On Thursday nights music is spun by the computer and beat matched using sync, no need for a real DJ ever.

A very very sad future...I really hope that this will not be the case ! :)

When I got into the investment field back in 1992, I was told that brokers and traders will be extinct in 10yrs. To be replaced by computers and online trading and investing. Its 2011, I have been sitting on a bond trading desk at an investment firm for years now. Sure the playing field has changed. Retail investors are now more savvy and use online mediums. But guess what, there is still a guy behind the computers negotiating the deal.
DJ'ing is an art form. A good DJ knows how to move a crowd by music selection done at that moment not a pre programmed set. A DJ should be able to create a crescendo via mixes. Without visual cues, this is not possible. A DJ IS NOT BE A JUKEBOX. This is why good DJ's do not take request, they are there to take you on a musical journey.
Bottomline, electronics may enhance the DJ's ability and sometimes can become a crutch (like autosync, worst invention ever). However, it can never replace a human intuition and assessment.

It would be more feasible if there was a video link, feeding back the state of the dancefloor to the DJ, so that
the DJ could see what was working and what wasn't. Requests could also still be possible, via email or twitter, SMS etc.
The DJ could even be sat at home, using Mixmeister to arrange the tracks.
Kind of like the club's own personal internet radio station.

Let me add that, yes I can see the whole streaming DJ'ing thing happening though. Especially after further enhancements of streaming technology.

@xcakid "Good DJs do not take requests"... I think you need to learn a little more before you come out with statements like that, "Good DJs take requests and fit it into the night wherever possible"
I just hate it when people come out with damn arrogant lazy dj follow the herd statements.

Tell that to Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, Eric Prydz or any other well known touring DJ's the next time they are playing at a club near you. Tell me how that works out.....
As for me, although DJ'ing for some years, I am not in that caliber yet, so I do take request on occasion. But if I am playing at a club that is an EDM club, and someone ask for hip hip or some stupid song. I tell em flat out NO!!

Oh for goodness sake!
Of course superstar DJs that are doing a guest slot in a club are going to play their own set. Who said anything about this hypothetical 'future club' having a superstar guest DJ?
And it's also obvious that if the club has a policy of only playing Style X, then a request for Style Z is going to be refused.

On the positive side...if there are no DJ's in the future I shall not have to read threads like this one.

Tayla,
The better you get the less requests you get, because you've already read the crowd and are playing what they were going to request before they've even requested it.
I think thats what he was trying to say.

the last dj we had that told a customer he wasnt going to take a request was un-employed at the end of the night.
your customers are an integral part of a "musical journey" and if you don't play what they want to hear, then you will be walking a very lonely road - or being chased down a lonely road followed by your fellow un-employed bartenders, waitresses, and bouncers who are really pissed that you let your ego chase away their paychecks.
autosync/beatmatch was never designed to be a "crutch" it is just another tool to add to an arsenal of tricks. and my "human intuition and assessment" tells me that when i see a song isnt working during a mix and my floor is emptying then i have seconds to get out of it and into the next one without the music stopping and looking like an ass and ANY tool that makes that work is a damn good one!
oh, and you also forgot to tell me that i am not a "real dj" cause i dont use turntables, timecodes, vinyl, cdj's, or an external controller.

Huey, traditional radio is dying. That is why it is changing so much in larger markets. The big companies know the end is near so they are ringing every last penny out of the beast before it dies. I will not bore you with the details, but ask yourself why all of the big name morning DJs seem to be moving to XM or going pod casting. If you want more info, PM me and I'll fill you in with all the details but, it is not pretty.....

Terry with all do respect I'm 36 years old not some dumb ass kid. They use AM, FM, XM (cause theres more money). My point was that they are doing this and have been doing this already for years. When I was a kid (before we could get into clubs) they would have guest dj's on the radio doing live sets and you could call in and make a request. Even now to this day they still it. On my way home from the have these dudes called the "Baker Boyz" do a set of whats hot right now, then on Friday or Sat night they have like a 2 or 3 hour show. You can make request to them via Twitter or Facebook or even call in. Theres other dj's like "DJ Sticky Boots" who do the same thing. Ok so when we were kids it wasnt a club where I got patted down but there was always that 1 person who thought they were the bartender, lol! We had a big fire (mode lighting, lmao!) going and we'd call in and make our request, dance and have a good time. Its basiclly the samething has he was sayin but with the bodyguards.......... Now lets jump to more recent times. Now its even easier for us to stream our parties, audio, video or both. We've been streaming some of our shows for a couple of years now. Just 2 weeks ago when we were in Rockford (not to far from you I believe) we stream the whole night. People love it!!
Now do I think its the future I REALLY hope not, but I can see some die hard fans willing to pay to get into some where just to dance and see the DJ on a big screen, making request via Twitter or Facebook. But even if it is lets hope were the ones their coming to see. I dont think a computer can EVER replace us, although MixMeister and VDJ's automix do work really, really well, almost scary sometimes. Ok now I'm rambling on.
Good Day
Huey

More people will always continue to listen local free radio because theres no fee. If you wanted to promote a huge event, you will have better results on local radio than XM. If you live in a state where local radio is not good, then i can see you getting Satelite radio. In my opinion, local radio will never die. Its too many people tunning in at the office, at home, cruising in their car, etc.

Local radio, especially in smaller markets, is almost 100% animated. The times when there would be a live person broadcasting 24/7 are long gone. It is creeping into the larger markets by drips and drabs but, it is coming....I don't want to hijack the OP's topic but happen to know more than just a little on this subject...

I think its really up to the dj's to keep people entertained. If your the type of dj that can be replaced by an iTunes playlist then you deserve to be replaced. it becomes harder and harder these days but find a niche and no machine can replace the human.
I think its fair to say that depending on the type of music and setting that could dictate how easily you could become "extinct", while the more hands on dj/musicians would continue to grow.

I wonder if we will see the day when Terminators are behind the controls in deejay booths. J/K. he he
No but seriously, I kind of fear the age when all human beings--except for programmers--will be replaced by AI and machines. I honestly think that at the rate civilization evolves in conjunction with in-demand technology breakthroughs, most humans will be replaced. It isn't no coincidence that the globe is experiencing record unemployment and brink of economic disaster. People have their heads in the sand and politicians aren't being totally truthful with what's going on in the global markets and economies, imo.
