They've been around for a few years now. Bjork was the first to use one live in concert.
There's no black art. It's just a video camera and projector under the table. The camera picks up the shapes on the blocks, which is then fed to computer software which performs a function based on the shape picked up. The projector feeds back an image to the table based on what the function was.

there is an instructable somewhere that shows you how to make one using a paystation eyetoy some blocks of wood and some paper for drawing images for different parameters
