My guess is that you ask the maker of the song...
I don't know anything about copyright and all that stuff, but I don't think they would "appreciate" it if you release the song on your own...
I even don't know if there is anyone who is willing to release it...

A "moombahton edit"? So er.......you slowed it down?!

You don't "create" something by slowing down a track that already exists!

It makes me laugh, people thinking they're producing or remixing by changing the tempo. :-)

I found a guy on YouTube once, posting clip after clip of "remixes" that he'd simply sped up in Audacity. It took several emails back and forth before I finally persuaded him that he wasnt' "remixing" anything!!

Yes, I slowed the song down, but I also completely changed the intro and the whole feel of the song. So I do consider it an edit/remix.

Haha, the question isn't about what constitutes a remix, but what about copyright...

If you honestly think it's of high enough quality to get a commercial release then you have to get in touch with the artist and/or record company and offer it to them and obviously if they took it then they would pay you for it.

The law says you have absolutely no right to mess around with other people's songs and then sell or give it to other people.

However, the truth is that thousands of people remix songs and put them on soundcloud or put them on zippyshare or similar. If it becomes very popular then the record company might want to take it on and release it to make money. Or they might sue you. It would be completely up to them- but I've never heard of a case where an unofficial re-mixer has been prosecuted.

Back before the internet, people made unofficial remixes and got them pressed onto vinyl unofficially. These "white labels" occasionally became popular and got taken on by the record company, but, it was of course illegal so the remixer would remain as anonymous to avoid prosecution.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for this answer, it makes me smarter :)

Actually, the law isn’t nearly as black and white as said here. In the US it’s called Fair Use. In Canada, it’s called Fair Dealing (many other countries have their own versions, but the US one is the version to pay the most attention to as many of the servers we use are located there – and if you use a dot com you fall under US jurisdiction).

Most of these laws are tremendously outdated now by the digital age, but they lay out the framework by which you may use some copyrighted material without obtaining permission. To make a very long story short, it’s grey and fuzzy as to what is and isn’t legal.

So, post your remix on something like Soundcloud (as long as it is an actual remix as you describe) and as long as you *** NEVER *** charge anyone a penny for it, it is extremely unlikely anyone will come after you. Should the record companies be upset by it, it is far more likely they would just have the service (ie. Soundcloud) pull it.

one of the best doco's i've ever seen, get on to it...
