What is the best way to categorize music?.... I'm trying to stay away from using itunes.... I only want the song in my database once but want to be able to place the song into different sub folders.... for example: you might be able to put one song into the following categories: Dance, Club, Wedding, Introduction songs, etc.... is there a way to do this without loading up the hard drive 4 times with the same song?

Here is My Input. You can orgainize your music any way you want but, I dont think its a good idea for a dj to organize his music if by year, artist, etc. I have many sessions of a specific genre and i have sub folders inside that genre folder.

Sample of Mine folders

Dance Inside this main dance folder, I have many songs just dumped inside. If i ever want to add a track vfrom this folder, i just drag it into one of my session folders.
---(Sub) Dance music 90's 1
---(Sub) Dance music 90's 2
---(Sub) Urban dance 1
---(Sub) Urban dance 2
---(Sub) pop/Dance 1
---(Sub) pop/Dance 2
---(Sub) Vocal dance
---(Sub) Electronic Dance.

Reggae
---(Sub) Reggae classics 1
---(Sub) Reggae Classics 2
---(Sub) Reggae 1
---(Sub) Reggae 2
---(Sub) reggae 3
---(Sub) reggae 4

Etc. I have more than 50 sessions.

LOL, I think this happens on every DJ forum I see. Basically how and what you like to mix will change how you organize. My self, I used to use Media Monkey to manage all of my files, then scan it all with VDJ. Now, I have 3 iPhone's and 2 iPod's. I got great deals on the first 2, so I kept things the same. While I prefer Mediamonkey, I did not like having to mess with it when an IOS update would come out. Also, I needed iTunes anyway for managing the phones. I finally just settled with iTunes, mp3tag, and musicbrainz. I let iTunes manage the library. I create my play list how I want them, group-able even, and VDJ can see the list's just fine. If new stuff is added, it is in the recently added list, which makes adding to VDJ a breeze.

To sort for mixing, I use the genre and comment tags in the files, and virtual folders and filters for stuff not in playlist's. If I want to change how I search for stuff, I just change the parameters of a folder or the songs in a list. The files stay where they are, so things don't get lost and confused. Also, with list's, virtual folders, and filters you are less likely to get dup files across directories.

I'm have the same question. People talk about "Virtual Folders" or "Filter Folders" but what are they and how do you use them? Same goes with "Mp3Tag", what is it and how do I use it?

I've been a mobile DJ for years... mostly weddings, etc. I am just getting started with laptop DJ'ing. I want to be able to rip all my CD's to my hard drive or external hard drive but want to do it in a way that will allow me to search and find a song if I want it. If I get a request for some Disco, I would like to be able to scroll through my Disco folder and pick a song instead of scrolling through 30,000 songs on the hard drive.

I use Audiograbber to rip the songs. I just ripped the new Promo Only CD. When I found it on my hard drive, the entire CD (all 20 songs) are put in it's own file or folder. If I rip another CD, I find that in it's own file as well. This does not seem like it is going to be a good way to find songs later.

Like "Fra", I want to be able to rip the song to the hard drive and maybe put it in 3 or 4 different places like 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, Latin, Disco, Dance, Top 40, Slow Dance Songs, Specialty Songs (cake cutting, etc), Introduction Songs. For example, "I gotta feeling" can be in 3 different categories, Dance, Top-40, Introduction Songs. "Let's get it on" by Marvin Gaye can be categorized in 70's, Slow Dance & Specialty Songs (garter)

How do we do that without putting the song on the hard drive 3 times? People mention Virtual Folders, Windows Folders and Tag Editors but I have no idea what they are or how to get started with them. I would love some help and suggestions but please explain it to me like I don't know anything (which I don't).

I am using a Denon MC-6000 mixer

Mp3tag is a ID3 tag editor for audio files. It lets the files hold information such as title, artist, and a lot more in the meta-data of the file itself. This is saved to each file. This is good for what ever program or player you use to have the same, uniform, information. Mp3tag is a way to update and modify these tags.

Information and download for it can be found at this link:
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

Virtual folders and Filters in Virtual DJ are ways to sort and group your music to make them easier to browse and search, without moving the files around.

Information for these can be found in the manual. And from the following links:

If you have specific questions after reading those, please continue to ask.

Do you have a program for organizing or managing your collection, or a player other than Virtual DJ?

I do not have a program for organizing or managing my collection... or a player other than Virtual DJ... I was trying to stay away from using iTunes... do you feel that is the best way to get things done on VDJ?....

I will go through all of the links you gave me... I'm hoping it will be an education for me.... Thank you for them...

PS: I went to http://www.mp3tag.de/en/... how and when do I use that?

The mp3tag is good to use if something has gone amuck when ripping a disc and things were tagged wrong, or if you want to mass edit the comment field, etc.

As far as itunes, I would not want to get into a Chevy vs. Ford debate. My favorite program for managing my music was Mediamonkey, as I stated earlier. But, as far as ease and convenience, right now I would recommend iTunes, especially if you already have iDevices (iPod, iPhone, iPad). The other thing that really stands out for me is that VD-J can read the iTunes database for it's playlists. I like being able to set up some list's, load them on my phone, and listen to them for a while. I can change what I like in iTunes easy, and, when I'm happy, it is already in VD-J ready to go. If I make an addition to the library with iTunes (add a song, change a title) then it shows up in the "Recently Added" playlist or in the smart playlist "Recently Changed". Those will both, along with any other itunes lists, show up in VD-J easy to identify, add, scan, etc.

Do you have a reason for staying away from iTunes? I tried for years. I don't even use Windows other than for DJ'ng. (No Mac either)

I don't have a reason really other than I don't use an iPod... I also don't use my laptop for anything other than DJ'ing so I wanted to stay away from having to go online and update, etc... I also know a few people who don't use it... I'm really torn about using it but I want to do whatever works best...

I even thought of not downloading everything... just the songs I use the most... but that would mean having to bring cases of CD's and that makes no sense.... I feel that as long as I'm going digital, I should download every song I have to an external hard drive... maybe put my most used songs on my laptop hard drive (and a thumb drive as a back-up)... if I need to look for a song I'll get it from my external hard drive...

I'm going to check out all the links you gave me and will be back in touch with you with any questions if that's ok... thanks again

Sure, no problem.
Keep in mind, if you rip your CD's, your going to want to change the default settings of which ever program you use. Most programs set a default that is fine when listened on average ear-buds, but when played at any kind of volume, they are found wanting.

There is a lot of back and forth on what level people encode at, loseless vs. losey, better formats, etc. I will do my best to avoid those conversations. I always recommend ripping to 320kb CBR (Constant Bit Rate). At that setting 99% of people cannot hear the difference in a sound room with reference headphones. No one is going to hear it on a mobile or club rig. If it has the option for multiple pass, I recommend that.

I'm starting to get a handle on it... I'm reading through the VDJ manual and am starting to understand it and how I can categorize within it... however, it seems to me that the best thing to do is first have songs downloaded correctly (the way I ultimately want it) with good mp3tags, etc... that brings me to mp3tags, the program.... I read up on it and still don't understand it completely... does this program go through the songs you already downloaded and automatically add mp3 tags to the songs it recognizes?... or do I have to do it manually?.... if i have to do it manually, why can't I just do it the way I want it when I originally download the song?.... what good is this program?

In VDJ, i can change the tags... add a genre, rating, etc, which is great... that's a great way to be able to search for a song.... however doing this does not change the original file or mp3tag and I would rather change the original file because I use multiple computers and systems..... I want to be able to add multiple tags to songs outside of VDJ so that it's all said and done, I want it to be the same on any system I connect to my external hard drive... can you give me a little info on the mp3tags program and if you think it is worth using it or not...

I am not using a program to organize music... I was planning on ripping songs to the hard drive in categories.... then opening up VDJ to tweek it... maybe put my favorites in Virtual folders, etc.... anything you can help me with would be appreciated... thanks!
