Topic: How to assign key to activate a video effect

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

For middle school dances, I avoid playing music videos with drinking or a lot of bare skin, etc. I've found these free plugins from Pete (google search). I like the directional blur effect. How can I assign a button to turn it on? A toggle on/off would be great or I'll just assign another key to disable it. I think I'm close with this, but it's not working yet! I don't know if I need a single tick (') or quotes ("). I've seen different examples. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

effect select "PeteDirectionalBlur" active on
OR
effect select "PeteDirectionalBlur" activate

Is there a better way to blur or make the video content less obvious? What are other VJ's doing with racy videos?

How can I assign a key to enable/disable a video effect plugin?

Thank you so much for the reply. This is what I'm trying to do:
video_fx_select "Strobe" & video_fx

I replaced strobe with PeteDirectionalBlur to get this:
video_fx_select "PeteDirectionalBlur" & video_fx

Not working :(
I've verified the name of the file is PeteDirectionalBlur.dll and it's in the video effect folder with all the others. Even the example on the page doesn't work:

video_fx_select "Strobe" & video_fx

Strobe is also in the videoeffects folder. Can you help me? What am I missing? Do I need or not need single or double quotes? ( ' or ") I really need this hot key for a Prom this Saturday!

does the PeteDirectionalBlur effect work when you turn it on with a mouse? The reason I ask is your not supposed to be able to use third party video plugins...

Yes it works when I manually do it. Same for the supplied strobe video effect. I can't get either to work by pressing a key. That's what I'm trying to do, assign a key to toggle on/off a video plugin.

And I thought 3rd party plugins are okay, in fact many are, aren't they?

All I can say about these video effects is SPECTACULAR!!! thanks for finding them again!

I havn't had any problems mapping them to button even with some repeat automation. The only thing I can think of regarding why they aren't working on your laptop is you may have them in a different directory to the normal video fx, if that is the cause put all the dll files in with the other vdj video fx and you will be able to map them... Also I tried directional blur which turns on but I think my netbook im on isn't powerful enough to do it correctly

video_fx_select "petedirectionalblur" & video_fx

Here are a couple of examples with automation of the sliders:

video_fx_select "petekaleidascope" & video_fx & video_fx_slider 1 0% & repeat 50ms & video_fx_slider 1 +1%

video_fx_select "peteradialblur" & video_fx & video_fx_slider 1 20% & video_fx_slider 2 100% & repeat 50ms & video_fx_slider 1 +1%

video_fx_select "peterefraction" & video_fx & video_fx_slider 1 5% & video_fx_slider 2 5% & video_fx_slider 3 0% & repeat 50ms & video_fx_slider 1 -0.5%

Thank you for the reply.

I've added the files to this folder:
C:\Users\MyNameHere\Documents\VirtualDJ\Plugins\VideoEffect

When I did, I closed/reopened VDJ and I see them when I click Effects | Video Effects. Seems like the proper folder to me. I'm lost. :(

I just pulled my M-Audio Trigger Finger out of the closet. I'm trying to map it - to solve this. It's not showing in the mapping page. Any thoughts? Perhaps I can map/use this instead?

that's where the effects belong, not sure why it isn't working... I tried this on my keyboard and it worked fine "video_fx_select "petedirectionalblur" & video_fx" did you paste it in the mapper from this page. or write it yourself? Also did you move the sliders to make sure they are filtering the image...

you will need to create a definition file for it to be recognised, but you can use simple midi, just select that in the dropdown menu of the mapping tab... If you want to make a definition you can use chackl's tool and get it done much faster than writing it yourself.

I was able to map the Trigger Finger. Same syntax on the keyboard = nothing. I don't know why. But I'll use the TF for my Prom. Thank you for all of your help! Now...what cool things can i map? :)

Inviato Thu 12 Apr 12 @ 8:49 pm
Go figure. The TF doesn't want to stay mapped. So I disconnected it. Then I saw I had a lowercase letter assigned for the key. When I changed it to uppercase, voila! It's mapped to a key. Also I do realize the directional blur uses more CPU. And it appears the GaussianBlur is better and less demand on the processor. So I think I'm ready now. Whew...
