So I just got a Hercules MK4 and Virtual Dj LE. I am looking into getting the Virtual Dj pro, but I was wondering if I can use external hardware to add effects, beats, or samples to a live mix and when I am recornding with VDJ?

in regard to effects, if you mean external units like the korg kaoss or pioneer efx series you would need to be using an external analog mixer that has an effects send/return to use it properly. Then simply use the "record loopback" feature to record the master out from your mixer. Unfortunately even with all vdj's great audio routing possibilities it's not possible to create a send/return that can switch between decks to enable you to use just one effect unit... if you had one effects unit per deck you could do it internally but that is not optimal.
Adding an external sampler like an akai mpc or roland 909 would be possible, as you could route the samplers output through a line in, which you can set up in advanced sound config, then you are able to send the signal through one of the decks meaning you can pfl, eq and use vdj's internal effects. One issue however is that the midi clock is currently not working from reports I have read so you would have to manually match the tempos.
Another option for adding beats to your mixes is use the rewire reature so you can incorperate you favorite DAW. the way it works is you can create your track in the DAW using all of its great synth's, sequencers etc... then have vdj control the tempo and transport of the DAW.
If however you mean can you add more midi controllers to get more control over vdj's internal functions like effects (including vst) and the sampler that can be oneshot or beatlocked loops, then yes you absolutely can, vdj's mapping allows you to control all of these functions in very smart ways using any midi or HID controller.
