I have what I "THINK" is a database problem.
I have all my music and karaoke on a external HD. I use a macbook pro (Snow leopard).
I have been running this rig for a LOOOOONG time with no problems. I upgraded to a new macbook pro (Lion). Much more powerful with 16gigs of memory, quad core i7.
I downloaded VDJ to the new macbook, hooked up the ext HD and could not pull um most of my karaoke through the search. I don't know if I am able to pull up all my music but when I searched for karaoke, a very small amount showed up in the search.
I plugged the HD back into the old macbook and all was well, all music and karaoke shows up in the search.
I had a chat session with a VDJ rep and he did everything he could to help me and it seemed like it worked. At lease until I got to the club. I could not find my karaoke in the search with the new macbook.
I switched to my old macbook and I could no longer find my karaoke in the search.
The ext HD I have is a Seagate GoFlex. It can read and write on both PC and Mac even though it's formatted in NTFS. It has software installed (paragon) to make it cross platform useable. The rep downloaded paragon to the new macbook even though I told him the hard drive can read and write to both pc and mac. When he did this, it seemed to fix the problem but clearly it did not because at the club, I could no longer search for and find my music and karaoke on either machine.
This is leading me to believe it's a database issue.
I need ALL my music to show up on BOTH laptops.
What can I do?!?
PLEASE HELP
Please help as quick as possible because my next karaoke show is this coming Wednesday.

It seems that everything so far is leading to a format issue. Not a VDJ database problem.. this issue will only be fixed once and for all by changing your hard drive format to Fat32....
Good Luck

My HD is both read and write on both mac and pc. My other dj software works fine but it does not do karaoke. Until I had the VDJ rep play with the download, it worked on my old macbook.
I do not think it's a format issue. I can see all of my music and karaoke if I go into the individual folder and it all plays but I can't search for it.
I did not have this problem before.

....Well what I can tell you is a buddy of mine was having a similar problem, I reformatted his drive restored his files...and all is good now..
If you give the os what it needs to operate without interpretation that will give you better results...
PS, If you need to use those hard drive files in a Windows computer it will work, but not the other way around...

I have reformatted one of my older hd's to Mac os extended (journaled).
Will I run into any problems or issues?
I am transferring all my karaoke onto the Mac formatted drive.
If there is anything I need to do, please let me know. The only thing on that drive so far is my karaoke folder. Nothing else.

Djcity, di you make sure that after you hooked up your external drive to your new mac, that the external drive letter remained the same as it was on you old unit? I had the same problem once. just a suggestion. I.E., on your old mac it was drive letter Z, and on your new one it's something else other than Z? or whatever letter it originally had assigned to it?

Thank you. Once I finish re formating a new drive (AGAIN) I will check the lettering of the drive that I was trying to get working again.

This is the weird stuff happening now...
I am trying to add files and folders to the database. I click on a folder then add it to the database. I click on the next folder then add THAT to the database.
As I get through a few files, the content of the folders disappears. What I mean is that, I click on a folder and it will show what is in that folder. As I move on through the folders, They no longer show the content of the folders. Even if I go back to a folder that I have just clicked on that HAD the content in, now it does not have anything. This goes for ANYTHING I click on including the whole hd, the volume folder, desktop, net search, history...Anything.
If I close vdj and reopen it, all is kind of well. What I mean is, the folders have content again until i click on several folders. Then everything disappears again.
WTH?!?!?
The good news seems to be that as I add folders to the database, they seem to truly be added to the database but how can I add everything if the content of the folders keeps disappearing?
Also, I can't add the whole drive or the whole karaoke folder at once. I seem to have to do it each sub-folder, each folder one at a time.
I AM REALLY BLOWN HERE BEHIND THIS AND I DESPERATELY NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP! My karaoke show is THIS WEDNESDAY. IT"S MONDAY NIGHT 11:15pm now. I only have Tuesday to get this straight and working cause showtime is Wednesday.

City - Karaoke, NTFS and Mac. What a bad combo. Your relying on a 3rd party to read and write to NTFS that writes to a 3rd party software VirtualDJ.
We have discussed this and all have come to the same conclusion. Backup your music and format your HDD to fat32. There is nothing more that can be done. If you would like to continue using paragon perhaps they can be of better assistance.

Homeboy...
I have formatted the ext HD to mac format and it still did not work.
I have reformatted the drive to exfat and I am hoping it will work now but I won't know until all the music has transferred.

...Did you check the old drive letter to make sure it's the same as when you had it in the old computer, I think that may be the issue where your trying to add files that might already exist in the database, but can't see them because of the possible drive letter is not the same, just a hunch...
If you need to, change it under drive management..
Sorry I've been very busy lately, so will try to help you sort this out..

What is "journaled", you need a plain ordinary run of the mill fat32 format, nothing fancy...

Mac os extended (journaled) is mac format. it is how mac drives are formatted. It is native to mac.

How's it goin', did you check the drive letter? ...is it the same as in your old computer?

It no longer works in either computer.

Is the karaoke zipped?
If so, you may experience problems if there are too many in the same directory. Please see http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/I%20am%20unable%20to%20play%20my%20karaoke%20files%20or%20they%20do%20not%20show%20in%20the%20browser.html
NOTE: With today's large hard disks, zipping is not really necessary anymore.

Yes. The majority of my files are zipped.
Like other kj's, I have thousands of folders, thousands of subfolders and thousands of sub-subfolders.
I do not know how to unzip them all.
I am trying something new. I am adding everything to the database on a PC. I am hoping that it will work and that mac will be able to read the new database created on the pc.
Any help with the zip files and this whole sitiuation will be and is much appreciated.

Using a windows pc IF the ext drive was Fat32 you could have used winrar to do a mass unzipping.
I don't know of any Mac apps to do this but will do some research.

I have a windows pc. I have a exfat hard drive...
Is there a program that can go through my HD and collect ALL zip files?
Because I have so very many folders and subfolders and sub-sub folders, if there is a program that can find them all and for lack of a better word, collect them all in one place.
Is there anything like that out there?
