Topic: Syncing for a Wedding DJ

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Hey Fellow DJs!

I'm sure most of you are club/techno/house DJs on here and use a lot of the features of virtual DJ.

I am a wedding DJ so all I basically do is mix top 40 and the classic wedding hits.

When I want to crossfade two songs, I try to make sure they are at least within 10 BPMS of eachother.

Also when I click play on the second song I try to do it when the beat markers at the top are lined up,
sometimes however they are a little off. I believe to get them in sync I am supposed to press sync which
lines them up however I end up with one song going faster or slower than the other.

This is fine for club type music but for wedding music, hearing YMCA sound like the chipmunks doesnt work.

How do I go about crossfading and matching the beats together without changing the speed of the songs.

Sorry if this is a rookie question, us wedding DJs arent the best at this stuff! Thank you!

If the BPM of the two songs is not the exactly same, then one song must be either sped up or slowed down appropriately for it to match the tempo of the other, otherwise it is impossible for the two songs to be synchronised with each other.

To avoid the audible change in pitch (I.e: YMCA sounding like chipmunks), simply turn on keylock - Click on the padlock symbol marked 'KEYLOCK' above each pitch slider on the default VirtualDJ v7 skin.)

For best keylock sound quality, also make sure that advanced stretching is selected in CONFIG -> Performances.

Playing classics from the years gone by at a wedding doesn't really involve beat-matching.

I'm afraid experience is the only way you will learn.

I beat mix everything, even at weddings. Experience tells you that you cannot mix two songs that are 10 bpms apart. You need to get the bpms matched before, you try to make a mix. Use the key lock, and the sync buttons first. Learn how to use the jog wheel, and the pitch buttons, to fine tune the mix. Using the loop effect, can be a great help. Some songs, should not be mixed together. You may need to gradually increase the bpms of your set, to get to a point to mix in the song you want. There are also many remixes, and medleys available, that make classics easier to mix. There is no substitute for experience. You need to know your crowd, and know your music, then you can master the mix. Just beat mixing two songs together means nothing, if no one likes either song.

Your initial cue point is really important, if that is off your mix will be off. Using pitch bend is most helpful when you need a little nudge here and there. I also stay within a 10 BPM range and like a man and his music mix everything including, but not all the time, cocktail hour. Mixing is an art form that must be practiced, you really shouldnt rely on it all that much (the sync button). Most of us here never had a sync feature and feel it hurts DJs in the long run. Its also a "virtual" slap in the face to guys and gals who have spent hours upon hours learning their craft and have some come in an push a button. Mixing isnt the key tho, its about song selection. I know guys who really dont mix and hold a floor because of what they are playing, not how they are playing it. Good luck

You shouldn't sync your entire set, it will just end up being a huge mono tone throughout the entire evening.

Why would you do this at a private function? or at any event for that matter!

Been in key is much more important in my opinion, the 2 songs have to work.

This is what I was thinking:

Say you put on a track and the crowd go nuts - they're loving it.

You instantly think of a track to put on next......but wait, it's a different tempo.

Would you seriously not play it because it won't mix?

Would you choose something else instead because it's easier to mix in?

I play what's right for the moment. If it's slower, faster, another genre.....so what?

That's the cool thing about being a mobile DJ is that you can get away with a song faster than the other, change the key, genre, and get away with it. However, you gotta make sure that the transition is smooth, or that the song you are about to mix in, is one that is going to pump up the crowd as much as the song that is about to end.

matching the beats is not the only way to mix music.

Learn other tricks. Looping, cold hooks, fades, backspin, break, to just name a few.

On another note, stop playing YMCA for the love of god! hahahaha j/k, I'm sure you know how to please your crowd.

And they flock to it and dance, arms up in a Y

Hey guys thanks for ALL of your replies they were a great help!

Like another user said as Wedding DJ sometimes having the BPMS be withing 10 is just not an option.

The song is far more important than the transistion. I was just noticing that if I pushed play when
the red and blue dots at the time were in line it sounded A LOT better. so the sync button just basically
gets these moving at the same speed?

While I have all you here, is there a talkover button in virtual DJ for the mic. I'm just using the one that came with my
VMS 4.1 deciding what to buy. Love Virtual DJ so far however. The Automix is great for Cocktail Hour when
I can just let VDJ do the work.

Thanks Guys!

what version of VDJ u use?
