If I use the sync feature in VDJ what is the recommended maximum difference in BPM's between songs I should use to keep the songs sounding the same and not sounding speeded up or slowed down.... 5 maybe?
Example:
Song 1 - 130 BPM
Song 2 - 128 BPM
Should not notice any difference when syncing.
Song 3 - 125 BPM
Song 4 - 100 BPM
Not going to sound right.

I generally never go more then 2 bpm either way (total of 4).
You can also use keylock but I've never been a fan of it to be honest.

Not a fan of sync, only used on 2 occassion in the 3 years I have been using software to mix. Both time I was too drunk to beat match. LOL
Without Key Lock, I go +/-3
With Key Lock, I go +/-5 either way
When doing transition, mix half beats (140 into 70) or loop a faster beat to bring down to lower beat. Have done 130 down to 70 and vice versa. Can't do this cleanly without effects though. Either flange, filter or phazer.

How good songs blend on different pitches depends on a various factors.
Presuming you are using harmonically compatible songs, without pitch lock there is just a very small percentage of up and down before you'll start hearing it getting out of harmony. How much also depends on the listeners, some tone deaf people will never hear it and others might quickly notice it.
If you are using key lock than your keys will always stay in perfect sync, but even with advanced stretching being configured (which is a MUST) there will be a noticeable change in quality when pitching up and down. In general down is worse than up. The acceptable amount of pitching depends on the quality of the media and the song itself. If you are mixing EDM using 192Kbs mp3's the loss in quality is far less noticeable than when you are mixing non EDM with impressive vocal parts on high quality FLAC. Because of the high source quality and non noisy music any dip in quality will be quickly noticed.
But at the end it all depends on your ears .. just prelisten, does it sound ok? Just do it. You can get some pretty fun transitions using a tempo reset on a beatlocked track to go from one genre or tempo to the other in a mix.

One I can blame the owner of the club I was spinning at. It was Halloween and the guy keep giving us DJs (there was 3 of us playing that night) shots. I tried to quit after two. But did not work. My judgement was gone after two and he was very insistent. Needless to say it was a fun night and was thankfull that 1) I only had to spin for an hour or so 2) I had a ride home.

I agree this is 1000% right it is best to use your ears as your great tools in DJing. You can beat match songs having 10-beats difference and this technics defend on the time signatures of the songs you want to mix and it will works only on some of the songs having the same time signature. Sometimes in order to play and/or mix the song having huge BPM difference you need to listen properly this is where you must listen to the song fully. Some are easy to figure out, such as common signatures like 4/4 or 3/4. However, some are quite difficult to figure out although almost all songs stay the same time signature for the whole song, in some rare instances songs switch time signatures at any moment in between and this types of song are usually done, made, composed & remixed by some DJ's who does not have enough knowledge and principles in music they thinks what they have recorded & mixed are good enough and even professional DJ's have this much of errors.
The technic to do this is counting on your fingers. When the melody or rhythm starts, start counting. Every beat add a finger until the melody starts over, which is when you start at one again. Remember, whatever happens the principles of music applies that the note values are always an EVEN NUMBERS, the number that are usually used in music composition is 4 or 8, are the most commonly used time signature. Whatever number is the one you end up with before it starts over is the top number on the fraction of the time signature. You can also considered the key relative value (harmony) in mixing as one or the factors in good mixing.

Time signatures are written as fractions. The top number represents how many beats there are in a measure, and the bottom number represents the note value (Notes Values are Eight Notes, Quarter Notes, Half Notes & Whole Notes) which makes one beat. A time signature represents the length of the melody in a song. However, some songs are written in uncommon time signatures, such as 5/4, 7/4, 9/4 so and so.
