Topic: NTFS to FAT32

Im thinking of converting my external drive to fat32 (after backup on another external). Once i format the drive and replace the data, will vdj database read files as already scanned or will vdj have to re scan as if its a new file formatted in fat32?

Keep in mind that FAT was a predecessor to NTFS, so as technology advances you are going to eventually have to convert everything back to NTFS eventually....I dont see why the conversion wouldn't work. Might have to rescan your tracks, but not sure exactly how VDJ works in that respect. I'll let someone from Atomix comment on that...Good luck.

As long as you replace everything where it was previously there will be no issues. Also make sure your PC assigns the same drive letter once reformatted.

What is your reason for going to FAT32?

On the root of your drive there should be a file named "VirtualDj Local Database v6.xml"
Be sure to backup and restore this file as it contains all the info for your tracks (bpm, cues, playcount e.t.c.)

BTW:
NTFS is a self-heeling file system and its far more reliable and secure than FAT32 especialy for large drives. I understand that FAT32 is more widely supported for read/write operatios than NTFS among various OS and devices, but I wouldn't use FAT32 anymore...
And I wouldn't even think to format a large drive to FAT32...

I have an ext 1tb FAT32 drive when I use the clubs blasted mac/serato combo on Friday night. Since the Mac cant write to NTFS I loose all my cue points so I had to convert to FAT32 also. Every other night is VDJ on my PC.

I use a 1Tb external that is NTFS as I use a Mac boot camped with W7 and VDJ for my normal weekly residency.

I carry my previous 500Gb drive as a backup.

I am going to be demonstrating for Promo Only on stand B31 at The BPM Show at the NEC Birmingham next Monday 8th October. I took the opportunity to reformat the 500Gb drive to Fat32 and have installed a copy of my Video Database. This is so that I can mess about with the Mac version of VDJ. Also I have separated all my Promo Only Videos into their own folders as obviously that's all I can use on their stand. It's also a security measure as I will leave my normal 1Tb drive at home.

I'm also thinking ahead to the release of VDJ 8, I want see if the Mac version is on a par with the PC version.

To be honest, personally I would rather use two drives, one with NTFS and one with HFS+ with exactly the same content if I was to use both Windows and MAC OS than use a large FAT32 formatted drive. Trust me, in my daytime job I had some really bad disasters with large formated FAT32 drives...
Right now the only things that I have formatted as FAT32 are my memory cards and usb sticks! Nothing else!

Another reason for using FAT32 is that many controllers which are equipped to read your hard drive requires this format. For example, the Denon HD2500 permits you to connect external drives to it but will only read them if formatted in FAT32. There are also certain file size limits, but you should never have that problem with compressed formats like Mp3.

I believe you can format a large drive into both file sysens in one drive..

You actually mean to have two different partitions with different filesystems on the same drive... Yes, that's possible, especially if you do it on the MAC side.

That's correct, two patitions in one drive, so One drive for both Widows & Mac and more importantly...Can write back to the drive with no issues using both os..

i wanted to use the ext drv to play on other device/players, from you all responses it seems best to have one as ntfs and the other fat32.... thanks!!!
