Hey everyone
I will be building a fasade out of pvc pipe and I need some help with just how to get the lycra on it.
The frame for the fasade is the easy part. It's pretty straight forward. I just can't figure out how I will get the fabric into the frame.
I have not built it yet as I want to know how I will be doing everything before I start so any help will be welcomed indeed.

seen it done with velcro... buttons and other.. the issue that in the first hour of using it someone will lean on it and it will move too. this is why we build custom booths and make the pvc out of other materials like pipe lighter weight stuff.. remember if someone gets hurt on something like that its your issue... also people always spill stuff on it make it washable if your going to go this way...
http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=how+to+build+a+dj+booth&tnr=21&vid=&l=103&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DU.4820435804618850%26pid%3D15.1&tit=How+to+Build+a+DJ+Booth
the height of her booth is too high for my likiing but she did make it adjustable I would cut the pvc at 50 inchs as most counters or tables are 34 inchs... you can always add a double female to the cut to extend the booth taller.. also the pvc she used is the perfect thickness as it would support someone leaning on it..
Best advice ever was. Pack small , play big...

Might be a stupid question but.....
What is a gromet? Also, what material did you use?

I spelled it wrong, lol! "Grommet", http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003L0S7R4/ref=aw_d_iv_hi?is=l
This is similar to the kit I bought. They also have snaps.

Snaps sound good but how would I attach it to the pvc?
I know I sound stupid asking these questions but I honestly have NO idea about this stuff. I just know what I want and that I would rather build it than but it for $200+
Also. What material did you use if not spandex?

I'll do some checking on the snaps but as for the material, I just went into my local fabric shop and explained to the ladies what I was doing and they showed me that stuff, lol!

Cool.
Please get back to me on the snaps. That sounds like a good idea if it can be implemented. The grommet thing seems ok too but how do you get the grommets in the fabric? How do you attach the hooks it to the frame?

The grommets are hammered together, doesn't take much and the hooks are just screws. I predrilled the holes and just screwed them in.

Not wanting to steal anyones thunder but your best bet is to either sew a hem in the "spandex" to accomodate the size of tube you intend to use or buy the strips or round pads that are available and stick to both the material and the tube at strategic points all away around the frame.
Metal Grommets will eventualy tear away from the material.

I have this and it's pretty good:
http://www.djskirts.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=11434&sid=n529v76fk824lj72c47u005mj4922k5h
The entire facade is made of PVC piping with a drape that folds over so no velcro or fastener required-at least that's the one I have. It's about 4ft high so the draping is 96 inches wide. So the drape is folded in half and you slip it over the facade, almost like a dress.
The sides are 2 feet each and the front portion has 2 4ft sections so the width is 8 ft. You can make it 6ft by swapping out one of the 2ft side sections for one of the 4ft front sections or you can make it 4ft wide by swapping out the two 2ft side panels with the 2 4ft front panels. They give you a rolling bag & cover. Years ago, it was about $250-$300. Don't know what they are charging now.
They take orders twice a year now.

Velcro or the hem idea seems pretty good to me.

sorry, I'm late to the party.
DJ City, do you want to use white lycra/spandex so you can project through it and/or backlight it? If so, hemming each end of the lycra/spandex to create a sleeve to fit the pvc tubing through, as Paul stated, would be the way to go. It is important to have the stitching done by a professional seamstress, they will know to use the proper thread and stitching required for a stretchable material such as lycra/spandex.
Hope I'm making sense, I confuse myself if the paragraph gets too long.
Good luck to ya, sounds like a very good project, please share some photos upon completion.

Thank you...
I plan on doing this project this weekend.
I plan on up-lighting behind the facade.
My facade will be 4ft high x 4ft wide x 3ft deep with white lycra or similar material.
If i'm not mistaken, I will need...
6 4ft pipes
4 3ft pipes
4 3way corners
4 right angle corners
pvc cement
2 3x4 sheets of lycra
1 4x4 sheet of lycra
Am I missing anything? I have never built anything like this before.

Great idea.
I'm wondering if I want to use 1" pipe or larger.
Any ideas?

i used baseboard mdf sheet cnc'd and the spandex in the midde. another version is pvc/komatex frame and acrylic white semitransparent panels. the pvc pipe does not look as good. the rectangle for me is the way to go.
acrylic1/4" and komatex sheet 3/4" thick is very sturdy but heavy. and will cost about 200
baseboard mdf with spadex will only cost around $60-80 dollars
corrugated vinyl (carboard box texture) will ony cost 20 $ youcan buy them at rona, home depot, etc just paint the edge black andyou haveyour border.
all these can be flat and will fit in your trunk/backseat.
the one in my logo/avatar/pic is mdf with spandex

I have used the spandex material inside of a moulded frame with 5 panels and it works well.Consider drop in pin hinges for adaptablility.
I am now looking at the ceiling flourescent light covers/lens which come in sizes of 46"L X 24" to replace the spandex.I think it will diffuse the lighting behind my facade just right but also illuminate the entire facade nicely. It is made of a plexiglass material but can break if you bend it to much.Using a caulking to seal it to the panel frames I believe will work well.Look at your home improvement stores for these.
They go for about $7 a sheet.
Ill post a picture when I complete one.
Good luck!

Well....
That was quick and easy.

Now all I have to do is paint it and find the fabric and i'm done!
