I've never used active speakers. I'm trying to minimize equipment for smaller venues that's why I'm asking.
Here's what I'm about to order soon:
2 Behringer eurolive active B215D speakers
1 Behringer xenyx502 mixer
Those would be connected through RCA jacks from rmx controller. The only reason for mixer is for better control of main output volume and extra Mic inputs...
Biggest question I have is would this be enough for a small venue I play at regularly? It's about medium sized room. Kind of echoing place. Im guessing about 120 people max.(hoping will produce decent bass)
Appreciate any thoughts as I don't know much about these sound setups. Thanks

This setup will not give you a decent bass enough for 120 people, I will suggest you add a B1500D sub and that will be enough. I have the same setup which I use for smaller venues and I use JBL PRX for bigger venues. As compared to the PRX, the quality of B215D speakers are only good when used with subs.

It really depends on an individuals personal opinion of "decent" bass....
I'd say that compared to what most people would listen to at home, the 215s would sound fine.
They're PA speakers, they have 15" drivers, they'll go loud enough. 55Hz isn't particularly deep though.
Just bear in mind that they're full range cabs, so that 15" driver will also be handling mid range.
If you want a nice clear mid range (vocal frequencies) and a deep bass then add a bass bin and run the 215s as mid/top cabs (in fact with a bin you could use 12" or 10" mid/top cabs - smaller drivers are better suited to mids).

Ok so this will work, I will just definitely have to invest in some subs also. Thanks for suggestions.

Use the 1/4 inch jacks on the Herc. It's about 10db louder than the RCA connection.
Inviato Wed 14 Nov 12 @ 7:16 am
Why don't you buy a MC6000? and then you dont have to buy that mixer and go out with your rmx!
Inviato Wed 14 Nov 12 @ 7:39 am
thanks for the tip Tear......
do you use 1/4 to 1/4 or 1/4 to rca ....?
daniel have you previewed these speakers?
what's the return policy if you don't like 'em ?
to have different systems of different sizes for various occasions is a good idea
you make the judgement call on what is good enough....
the 55hz is not real low, if 55 hz is it's extremest low.... you might wanna augment that with
one or two active subs.......none of us can hear 20 hz , i don't know where that number came from ....
the last time i used a test disc on my old alesis monitor ones i couldn't hear there output at 35 hz.....
all the same there is a rough correlation between the lowest low and the quality in general of the low end

Especially as it's not stated how many dB the ouput has dropped by the 55Hz point...
It could be -3dB, it could be -10dB!
Note that the low EQ is centred at 80Hz with a max boost of 15dB!!!! Not a good sign.

@Charlie, the 6000 would be nice if I wasn't on a budget:) I would've been asking about qsc products over behringer..one of those xenyx mixers are only about 60us.
@Tear, great suggestion. I had forgotten they are better to use and I'd been using RCA this whole time. Chuck brings up a good point on how to connect that for best quality?
@Chuck, I may order on Amazon but not sure about return policy for that specifically. And unfortunately I live rather far from the nearest store that sells dj equipment so testing is hard to do for me.
I just need to get by till I figure out if I need one or two subs. I don't mind adding them I just can't go out and get everything at once. This will still look much better and cleaner than my current setup.
Thanks for responses.

I'm using Mackie Thump 15's, they carry some serious bass, only weigh 35 lbs and only run about $700 a pair
Inviato Wed 14 Nov 12 @ 9:05 am
I DJ at a small sushi bar monthly, fit maybe 200 ppl at full capacity. I just run 2 Behringer B215D. I just take the Low gain and move it to about 3 O'clock. No subs necessary. Never got any complaints about not having enough bass. If the place is echo-ey, I would suggest looking into getting a monitor. Mixing in that kind of environment is hell. Easy to gallop your beats.

i really like those behringers, its too bad i bought one and tweeter died after 5 minutes. went back and got mackie thumps.

Can someone confirm this. If I get a 1/4 to RCA Jack like this, connected to xenyx RCA input. Will that be 10 db louder or does it have to be 1/4 to 1/4?

Xcakid, thanks you gave me some hope;)

Using a different type of connector on the end of the cable doesn't affect the volume!
What you will have to beware of though, is overloading the Xenyx input if there really is a 10dB increase.

In my opinion, NO, the Behringers will not satisfy a room that size without subs. Two tops with a BBE Sonic Maximizer will sound decent without subs, but I wouldn't go with Behringer. I run two JBL PRX615's with a Sonic Maximizer when I don't feel like carrying subs and it sounds amazing.
Like I've recommended before, the B-52 V1000 is probably one of the most portable powered systems out there and best bang for the buck. I know two mobile DJ's who use them for small venues.
Some good YouTube vids about the QSC's also and how the different sizes perform in different applications.

@daniel ....if you're on a budget that's ok, we all been there ...
do the best you can
groovin is trying to do you a favor and point out that the eq section on that
mixer is gonna be weak ( not much boost n cut) ......
just take it a step at a time .... especially since you may get stuck with items you don't want
ideally (this is just my opinion) you could have a medium system and a large system with no
compromises in the quality of any of the components..... use the medium system for small venues
you just don't run it all out.......what i did and still do , in order to keep improving my equipment, is,
every time i replace an item i upgrade it significantly .....after a few years everything is good or very good

Eh? What mixer?
I was talking about the EQ on the Behringer cabs being at 80Hz when they allegedly extend to 55Hz, and that 15dB is a lot of boost.

Well, the wife has spoken and she says the kids GOT TO EAT!:) I wish I could have bought the thumps but in the budget I had to include the tripods, New speaker wires...and the mixer was also to introduce myself to live mixers. I've never owned one so have to see what they are about.
My current system was old, outdated, ugly and heavy that I always needed an extra hand to move around. Not good cause I did not want to rely on help everytime.
Needless to say I ordered my new setup and should be here by tuesday! Thanks for all you're input guys. I really appreciate it. I may report back my thoughts afterward. Wish me luck!
