It is deffinately possible as long as your laptop has a video output (you may need video output adaptors) and your TV has similar input. You didn't menton what laptop you have, OS on it or you TV, so you are leaving us with nothing to work with here.
I use VDJ to stream music videos on my 40" Samsung LED TV all the time at my professional events. All you see on the second screen is the video (nothing else) and I have the VDJ screen only in front of me (like you wish). My show display is a normal Samsung LED TV (not computer related) that I have used in my bedroom for a year now when i am not working. I also hook VDJ up at home to my old Misubishi RPTV for my house parties.
I have a DVI connection on my computer, so I bought a DVI to HDMI cable from Newegg for about $30. You will need the connections that apply to your laptop and TV.
Setting up you OS to extend you desktop is the next step. Goto Google and search "how to configure dual monitors for [INSERT OS HERE]".
The rest of the VDJ config is in the VDJ manual. Good luck!

Please see our FAQ pages:
http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/How%20do%20I%20output%20video%20or%20karaoke%20to%20a%20TV%20or%20projector.html
You will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Professional to be able to output video or karaoke full-screen. All other versions are limited to a small video window that can't be resized.

you can do it , i have three tv and a projector attached. you can get a usb to hdmi, or usb to vga or svideo out as well. Make sure that if you plug it into the usb that you have a hub that is powered and can support the version of usb. new usb 3 is usually blue lighted and usb 2 is not marked some of the extensions to extend usb are only 1.o so have the right cables. also if your going to buy a hdmi get the 1.4 version as the 1.3 is missing a pin and doesnt allow some hd pro and 3d stuff.

not sure about xp or vista but windows 7 is always ready to use dual monitors....
if you have the socket on the side of ur laptop that takes a monitor lead just plug the tv into that presuming u
a tv with the same socket. then right click on ur desktop and choose screen resolution to setup for extended display
u either can duplicate ur desktop on both screens or make the seperate monitors where u can drag and drop the vdj video
disply window too.....
as said to do this you will need vdj pro
