I was just wondering if I could ask you guys/girls a couple of quick questions regarding your dj sets... I know these questions seem trivial, but I am still learning the basics and just out of curiosity does anyone scratch when they mix at all? (even at the club) Also does anyone count the beats as well... Im asking because I am starting to learn these two skills and I am starting to make some mixes as well... Also when you dj at a club or party are you just hitting the play button and cue and repeating or is there more to it... Im asking this because I have been watching ultra videos (mostly Hardwell) and it looks like all he is doing is hitting the play... cue...and play again... It just seems like there should be more to it... here is the video I am talking about...by the way I am not trying to offend him or anything ( I think that he is really good at what he does)... This is just what it looks like to me from the scrappy angles given....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJchGizKtX4.
Thanks Everyone for your help,

You shouldn't need to count the beats or bars (literally saying "one, two, three, four...") because in most cases a track will progress in fixed sections of bar amounts - four bars, eights bars etc. which you should be able to hear without needing to count.

you have to beat match the tracks first you have to get them to play at the same speed and then mix them the reason he is hitting the cue is because it serves him as a preview so he can listen did he manage to get the bpm straight with the other track :) get it ?
search on you tube "beat matching" or something ike that to get a better understanding on things :) hope i helped :)

1) Yes I count bars/beats. Its the only way that I know of to mix cleanly since I never look at my screen with the exception of when I am looking for a song, loading it, adjusting BPM and seeing how much time I have left.
2) I don't scratch. I am horrible at it. Then again, I do not play much hip-hop in the clubs I DJ at.
3) One of the major thing about DJ'ing that you will never learn in videos is: READING THE CROWD That only comes with playing out and getting the feel for your audience. In a club environment this is a MUST. Unless you want to have an empty dance floor. Also big name DJs do not take requests. They have a pre-canned set they do and they stick by it. Your regular average joe DJ will get requests thrown at them. One must be able to sort through these, play the ones that fit, say NO to the ones that don't (luxury club DJs have over mobile DJs). So yes, it is way more than just hitting cue and play. There have been a few touring DJs that have been caught using pre-recorded sets. That is why you see a lot of touring and big name DJs just hitting cue/play and may nudging the jog wheel here and there.
So aside from just playing cue/play to beatmatch. You also have to worry about what song to play next to get people hyped or stay hyped. Then you have to deal with the numerous drunk people wanting you to play stupid music that will empty the floor or play country music in a Electro club, or the "song that will everyone at the club dancing". Then you have the sound guy telling you, you are peaking or some other crap he should be handling and not you. On top of that you have to please the owner/manager/promoter and keep the people there drinking spending money and not walking out.
Hope that helps

Count the beats, as and EDM DJ counting the beats is essential in beat matching. Pressing cue and play helps when you are beat matching, and that's probably why you see him pushing cue-play-cue play.
I don't scratch, scratching is a complete different art and in the world of EDM you really don't use scratching. Therefore, I have never bother to learn that skill.
I must agree that one of the most important things to learn as a DJ, is to read the crowd. Even as and EDM DJ you just can't show up and play a specific set, you have to read the crowd to see if they are getting into your set, and be prepared to improvise should you need to do so depending on how the crowd reacts to your set.
