Topic: Mobile gigs and young kids - Page: 1

Questa parte dell'argomento è obsoleta e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate

Hello, I don't know if it is just me but it seems every time I do a mobile gig and there are young kids they always seem to flock and hang out by the Dj equipment. Now don't get me wrong I love kids but I feel uneasy because they want to play fight, goof off or stand too close. Is it just me or does anyone else experience this? What gets me is some parents don't even come to get their kids or care what they are doing. There have been times where I feel like the baby sitter. One time there was there like 9 or 10 year old really interested in the equipment and asking questions. The kid seemed really into it and he asked if he could listen to the head phones. I had the Sony 700s for like 8 years (I loved those head phones) and the kid twisted them too much and broke one of the head phones off. I didn't get mad or even mention it because it was my fault I let him touch them.

I also feel like they throw me off my job because I a keeping a watch on them to make sure they are not tripping over wires or touching the equipment.

Have you com across this and if so, how do you address it without coming off like a child hating jerk?

I always find if you beat the biggest kid up the rest will stay away.... just make sure he doesn't have a mate, two against one just isn't fair.

Have packets of Haribo handy that you can throw across the room..?

Seriously though, would liability insurance not cover electrocuted children?

just politely tell them you dont want them to get hurt.

The funniest is when you turn up to a kids party and the mothers say right we'll see you in two hours were off to the pub!

Seriously, I had this once it was a nightmare.

This is where an assistant comes in handy, so you can focus on your job, they're able to keep them occupied. I taught my assistant how to juggle and they love it, so they stay away from me.

Another possible thing you can do, is a laser show on a wall or we do it over a bowl of candy. Sounds crazy, but hey it works.

I mean sometimes telling the parents to keep their kids away is like pulling teeth with oily hands.

Just some ideas that works for me.

I ran into this last weekend, real nice kid, I had an extra pair of headphones I was letting him listen to and then he just felt obligated to start pressing buttons on my gear. never once did I think about candy, but I DID have some glow sticks that I was able to taunt him away with.

but believe it or not, it didn't end there, few hours later now comes the extremely drunk chick that thinks shes a DJ... shes asking questions, and bumping up against me, and (kid you not) fondling me, then she stumbles and about knocks me over along with my equipment... then im like, "ok we're done now, im gonna have to ask you to go back around on the other side of the table". then she has the nerve to ask me in a drunk slur "are you mad?"... nope, not mad, but can you find that 12 year old kid? because compared to you I really miss that little bastard.

HAHAHAHA, TOO FUNNY!!!

I can say one thing about controllers compared to Turntables, somebody bumps the table and you'll get fewer skips, if any at all, lol

Guess i'm just mean.

I would tell a kid or adult. GO AWAY!!!

Lol

Yep! I think I know where your coming from Guys ;-)
No small Children were deafend during the making of this pic :-D

A bit of Mic feedback would have been handy for that one!

YES it happens.

That's when I get on the microphone and nicely ask OH THE JOYS OF BEING YOUNG and TO REMEMBER FOR YOU, ME & THEM for safety reasons & LEGAL reasons PLEASE stay back away from the EXPENSIVE DJ EQUIPMENT and NOW FOR THEIR ENJOYMENT and YOURS TOO IF YOU'D LIKE TO JOIN IN - It's HOOKE POKE TIME. ENJOY!

And for ME it works!!! ;)

I've had kids put their hands through my lighted facade to see how it lights up! One parent came up and saw what happened, but just gathered their kid and left without apologizing. I've always tolerated kids because about 98% are respectful and almost always, their parents are there to tell them not to touch and not get in the way. Sometimes, adults are the bigger issue.

I had a wedding about 4 years ago where I turned down the gains on my mixer, speakers, etc. but didn't power my equipment off. I went to change, which couldn't have been more than 3-4 minutes; I come back and there are two drunk people twisting every know on my mixer, hitting all the buttons and my gooseneck is completely bent over with the top of the microphone off. I came back and politely asked what the hell they were doing and they proceeded to tell me that they wanted to play more music. At that point, I was pretty nasty with them and told them to get the F away. The drunk chick starts raising her voice and telling me I'm an a**hole for yelling at them. I told them that this is my way of earning a living and that they can't afford any of the equipment if they break it and that they need to respect my space, etc, which I'm guessing didn't sink in

They sheepishly walked off and then the girl's mom came by and basically told me I didn't have to yell at them. I proceeded to tell her that my $300 microphone is broken because of them & who will be reimbursing me? She dropped a load when I told her the price of the mic & every piece of my equipment. She then apologized for her daughter & son-in-law's behavior. I told her her the price of the equipment doesn't matter, it's the fact that they thought they could come over and start messing with people's livelihood.

I'm with Tayla, and DJCity, you have to pop a cap in one of them early. I am very professional, but do not take any grief. Plus, I'm old and really don't give a puck. I speak to the client, and let them know what is allowed. I want them to deliver the rules. Sometimes it does not work, and I have no problem slapping you around. No, you can not come around here, you can not touch anything, I do not have time to chat. You do need an assistant, to take request, because it never stops. You can also use post it pads, and one of those white boards. Set it up on a table at least 10 feet from you, and they can write their request, stick them on the board, and you pick them. Do not be afraid to make announcements about children being too close. They definitely should not have their heads in your speakers, for safety sake. If I come out and someone is touching my controller, it is not going to be pretty. You do have to have a lot of patience with kids.

if they are a nuisance i stop the music and make the announcement ......usually about the 3rd time for that they start to figure out the music stops and they police themselves

if the kids are small enough and they think i am baby sitting , kindly uncle chuck gives them an espresso and a free puppy

Haha.. I have a file called moisquito.wav for just these types of situations.
Google it.
It's an annoying sound in a frequency range that is generally only heard by young ears.
You can see a huge waveform in VDJ, but when you play it you don't hear anything. but the kids do!
It doesn't work equally well on all systems as you may have a component that slacks on the 'unhearable' end frequencies.

It was originally used outside convenience stores in the UK to keep teens from loitering, without annoying the adult customers, but was soon adopted by the youth as a ringtone so that they could hear their phones ringing in school without the teachers hearing it.

Found it here.

Gonna try this at my next teen disco and see how many of them reach for their phones ;-)

Cheers,

Roy

ahhhh..... The old saying goes, misery loves company. great posts guys.

To the left and right of my booth are machine-gun pillboxes, M-60 Browning. Now these babies tend to heat up so we shoot in 3 second bursts. In the event of capture I will personally distribute these cyanide capsules to be placed under the tongue like so, to anyone working with me. I, of course, will deny involvement and cop an insanity plea......
