Toss up between Roxanne Shante and MC Lyte, because these were the 2 females who doing more than selling albums! Shante was the first true female freestyle rapper and her first single was the real reason the Roxanne Phenomenon became what it became in the golden era of hip hop! Roxanne Roxanne would have just been a one hit wonder, not to mention she was the only female MC to battle legends like KRS One and stand her ground! MC Lyte, just came with that raw energy, that made her brothers Audio two, openers from being headliners! Respect to Yo Yo, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, Salt-n-Pepa, Lauren Hill, Rah Digga, etc. Yet Roxanne Shante and MC Lyte, were the beast of the game! No ghost writers, no using sex as a gimmick, just allowed pure talent to make it happen for them!

Big daddy Kane used to ghost write for Roxanne Shante in the Cold chillin era
I would rank Lauryn hill & Missy Elliott as the greatest on a global scale.
Ms dynamite for Europe
Salt & Pepa & Lisa ( Left eye) Lopes & Wanda D For rnb / pop crossover ..
Floetry. Monie Love & Estelle for breaking the USA market
Latifah & Mc lyte for longevity ...
Jean Grae , Queen mother rage. for underground & lyricism.
Ladybug Mecca ( Digable planets ) for sassiness.
Roxanne Shante & Antoinette ( who feuded with Mc Lyte ) for battles & controversy.

Check your history, because she was on Cold Chilling records way before he even hit the scene and on when they did tour, she was freestyling while he said the same thing night in and night out on their routines.
L. Boogie was on the verge of taking the crown until she went in to her funk.

Kane was a ghostwriter for Shante.. check this interview.
http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/interviews/id.1597/title.big-daddy-kane-rap-like-no-equal
She's still a great femcee ..But i think she relied too much on controversy to promote herself. She battled Busy b at the new music seminar. Called out ll cool j , Run dmc , Kurtis blow on her .Bite dis single. she also called mc lyte a man & dissed yo yo & latifah to promote her big mama album..Mc lyte & yo yo confronted her on some talk show. (I can't recall the name.. it may have may been the Jane whitney show ). She also lied about being a psychologist on the beef dvd .
Lauryn hills latest song ..Neurotic Society is ok but i hope her new label releases some acapella's with her new stuff as the production is poor..

Ok, I see what you mean and news to me, because in the beginning, it was all her. I don't know when he started ghost writing for her, but from the people who I knew from Cold Chilling, they all said she was doing her own thing. So this is a major surprise to me. I pretty much seen most of those battles unfold only being a train ride away from Queens Bridge.
Good read though ;)

Although not a female rap group...I had to add this and they are from Canada ... quite rare ... and they are considered to be both an R&B and Rap Group..For those hip hop DJ's out there, here's another one you might want for your collection:

you made Rah digga number 10...are you basing this on lyrics or celebrity. lil kim should be under the ones that write their on rhymes, and not include the first female rapper on def jam...Nikki D
Inviato Fri 31 May 13 @ 8:35 pm
To those that dont think Nicki Minaj is one hell of a lyricist yal letting the antics steer you away from lyrical talent. I know lil wayne has poisoned her mind but on a strictly lyrical standpoint. Strip away the bullshit....the girl is talented...I would put my money on nicki against half to three quarters of the male rappers in the industry....gucci, wakka, future, 2 chainz amongst a few....

Salt & Pepa w Spinderella

I have to say the best Lyricist is Lauren Hill...Just based on lyrics.

Plus Nicki sometimes does it in an English accent! thats worth a few points :)
