i have spent the last year organizing my music folders in a way that makes mixing much easier, to the point where i dont even have to know what the song is, if its in a folder i know it will fit the moment. well my buddy asks me to teach him how to dj, i said sure he even came over when i did a set to see how it goes. now hes asking for all my music in the folders and everything. i told him thats my bread and butter it was alot of work to get it to that point and i feel he dosent want to do any of the work. am i being wrong for saying no?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying no. You can't spoon feed him all the information. He should figure out by himself how he want's his folder's to look like. A helping hand can only go so far..

I fell out with a friend of 20 years over this sort of issue. He had started doing friends parties and asked me for copies of the current top 40. I said "I don't use mp3s, I only use videos" as that usually deters people asking. He said they will do! Told him "not a chance" as all my videos have been purchased legally from Promo Only and NOBODY but NOBODY gets copies as this is my livelihood. We haven't spoken for over 3 years.
Another guy was starting out DJing in a bar in my hometown. He asked me to give him a hand putting music on his hard drive. Thinking he was having a technical issue I asked where was he transferring the music from, CD's, old laptop? He said no he wanted me to put a copy of MY HARD DRIVE on his!!! He got a two word reply and the second word was OFF!!! He apparently tried every DJ in the area and got the same response. lol.

I'm in the same situation just now. Saying no sounds bad when it's a friend but why should my last 29 years of building the perfect music collection go to someone for free because they can't be bothered doing the work themselves?
Easy decision really, and you never know when that person will undercut you at some point using your music collection?

I'm surprised you even have to ask!
Surely you know that when you purchase a track (of any format) then you only actually purchase the right to listen to that track, not the content itself - so you can't copy it, broadcast it or use it for public performance without the consent of the copyright owner (in other words a licence).
Even without considering that, you've spent a lot of money on your collection, and he just expects you to hand it over? :-O

Of course it is not wrong to say no.
It is a sad reflection on the lack of value placed on Music and artists in general that the "Can I get a copy of your drive?" question gets asked by people more and more often. Just because the transfer of music files has become an easy tasc these days it seems thay meny people have no respect for the money and time you put in to build a collection and even less respect for the work put in by the Artists who produce the music in the first place.
Not only is it against the copyright laws in most countries ( As pointed out by Groovin) it is moraly wrong. I look upon it as theft pure and simple!!!
