I wish I knew what the songs were about. Hard to keep a mood going when you mix songs with different ideas. Only way I can think of to find out is to find the lyrics and translate them. Wish there was a place that had the tracks and summary in English as to what the songs were about.

I'm not saying all, but some songs I find the lyrics and use the translate to english button, I play the song back to get a feel and understanding for them. I even go to Youtube to translate the comments of a song to see if would work at an event. I know it may sound time consuming, but when dealing with a crowd that speaks a different language than you, this has been time well spent for me. I live in NY, so I get more than a fair share of Latin parties and I give them the very possible night I can.

Happy Mixing!

I hear you on that. I told the person who hired me, I speak very little spanish, I have very very little spanish music, and I've never done a gig with spanish music before. They said here's a list of some of the stuff we like, and I'm allowed to play some top 40, hip hop, reggae, dancehall etc too.

I don't think it would be a problem to have a few 10-20 minute mixes on hand regardless. I never use pre mixes, but I will probably resort to it this time.

Pretty Lights: If the party is being billed as a Spanish event, make sure you have tons of Spanish music. Think of it as a Spanish party that you might be able to throw in a few non Spanish hits in.

I have made the mistake of thinking I could play a little of this or that to fill out the night at a Spanish event (Dominican bday). Every time I switched from Spanish to English music, the floor emptied and I got a swarm of people over to the booth telling me to put Merengue or bachata back on. Why? Because that's what they came to do: dance to Spanish music. After the second time being swarmed, I just played Spanish tracks for the next 4 hours and everyone was fine.

So if your event is going to be a little-bit-of-everything party, then cool, rock on. But if it is a Spanish dance party specifically, just make sure to have a full event's worth of Spanish tracks in your library.

we should get one ting clear her, that there is a big difference between Spanish and LATIN.

spaniards from spain do not have the same history with music as the latinos do, and salsa for example wont work as well on them as it will on latinos. the spanish are mad about reggaeton but they seem to like older reggaeton than the latinos , whereas the latinos would be sick of the older stuff by now.

also the spanish would be happier with a mix of modern english songs thrown in

thats what my experience tells me anyways

and if you mean latinos , then you also should consider the country form which these latinos come from because this can also influence things to an extent.

good stuff!

^ I agree, knowledge is power.

@djdax I totally agree with you, I would never go into an event without more than what I need. A similar event like yours was already thought up in my head as worst case scenerio. Although they did specifically send me a page of their genre likes, with top 40, hip hop, rock, etc being included. But also getting familiar with some of these genres takes time!

@matty yeah they're Dominican so most previous track suggestions should be fair game. Thanks for the info
