Hey guys

I'm very new to this community and 'DJ ing' in general. It only caught my attention because of how much I love Hardwell and Martin Garrix, since I'm really new to the scene I have yet to discover any DJ's who are not mostly 'mainstream', some people have laughed at me because of that but hey.. gotta start somewhere.

So I downloaded the free Virtual DJ program and have been playing around with it for a couple months, just basic looping and beatmatching. Just trying to get a feel for it all and get somewhat familiar with the controls and if this is actually something I want to pursue just as a hobby and maybe when I throw parties.

So my basic questions.. I find it really hard to control the Gain and various mixer knobs so am starting to look for a controller that is compatible with the software. Any big suggestions that stand out as a VERY affordable, cheap, beginner controller, Preferably around $150MSRP, just an idea as what I am looking for, something similar to the Hercules Instinct controller (wasnt sure if compatible with Virtual DJ).
So 1st question. Any ideas guys or suggestions?

2) Anywhere that I can download TONS of songs, I need more music but getting to know individual songs and then downloading takes forever..

3) How to get more effects for Virtual DJ?

4) Was interested in a Launchpad eventually also, just a quick question though, do all the effects come with the purchase of the actual Launchpad? Or do I have to insert my on plug-iins and everything

5) Could I have a basic list of everything I need.. everywhere I go people say different things.. As of now I have a decent Laptop, Virtual DJ, and Sony VDR headphones as well as decent external computer speakers.. What else? A controller.. and then do I need a USB sound card? (lots of people are telling me I should)

Now i know this is alot to ask.. but i'm just very curious, If you cant answer them all, feel free to paste links and areas where I can find answers to these questions. Thank you very much in advance everyone!!

1) Take a look at the Hercules DJ Console series of controllers as well as our hardware page to see a selection of hardware that's compatible with VirtualDJ.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that the hardware you choose comes with VirtualDJ included (Confirm with the store before purchasing), otherwise you will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Professional to be able to use the controller. Home FREE is for mouse/keyboard only and does not support using MIDI controllers. You can also upgrade from VirtualDJ LE included with selected hardware to the full VirtualDJ Pro at a discount (The amount of discount depends on the product you purchase.)

2) Music can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon MP3, etc. or if you will be a working DJ, you can join a DJ pool such as PromoOnly. You could also subscribe to ContentUnlimited. The monthly audio subscription will give you access to stream over 15 million songs via the Internet.

NOTE: DO NOT download your music illegally. Discussion of illegal activities and downloading is not permitted on the VirtualDJ forums. Please support the artists and music industry by purchasing your music from legal sources.

3) You will need to purchase the full software to be able to download and use additional effects. VirtualDJ LE allows these to be tried out during the 20 day Pro trial period, but after that, you will no-longer be able to use them. LE is limited software and does not support using custom effects outside the full Pro trial.

4) Novation Launchpad does not come with any VirtualDJ effects or VirtualDJ LE included. You will need to purchase or upgrade to the full VirtualDJ Professional to be able to use this controller.

5) You should start off with the basics. A laptop (The one you have now should be OK if it works good for Home FREE and has been optimised for DJ performance), a basic controller such as Hercules DJConsole with VirtualDJ LE included, a pair of headphones (Try these out instore if possible to find a pair that best suit you and your own personal preferences), powered stereo monitor speakers for home (Bedroom) use or active PA speakers for playing out live.

There are lots of controllers around that have a built in soundcard.

As long as you buy one of those, you won't need to buy a separate soundcard.

There'll just be one USB connection that handles both controlling and sound. Your speakers will then plug into the audio outputs on the controller rather than your computer.

everybody knows where tons of songs are ..... don't do it

getting to know the music is the cool part ...... so if it takes awhile that's a plus .......

i have a decent laptop too .... it refrains from swearing , and helps old ladies cross the road

ever since i optimized it for dj ing though, it has been reliable for audio and video playback .......
